ID Request for WW2 Truck Bodies
G'day everyone from the sunny Northern Territory.
I was trawling through archived imagery from some years ago and came across these photos of abandoned WW2 gear around five hours drive from here. I remember taking the pics as I had no real idea what this stuff could be, but then never followed up on it. Please check them out and post your opinions (or answers!) The gear is all heavy gauge steel, with the two railings/hand rails being quite intriguing. The structure with the hand rails is separate to the assembly with the three tapered tray/body supports. I even wondered if the assembly with the hand rails could be railway related... Over to you. Jared |

Fat
I'll take a punt ....
Ford Marmon-Herrington Tractor, Artillery (Aust). Could be No.1, 2, or 3. Do you have a length measurement? Most likely a 3. Probably not a 3A as there are no cable pulleys visible in the rear corners. Mike |

The Ford Marmon Herrington 3 and 3a gun tractor only has two main tapered cross members. The rear seat section is the same but the rounded mounts on the arm rests are different.
It is too long for a gun tractor if it is all the one body.

How many years ago Jared.
If you think it might still exist it would be worth grabbing. It resembles the gun tractor pattern enough to be of the same design and there are a few interesting bits poking up through the leaves that are intriguing. The hinge rods on the third rib are where the winch cover on a3a is but look odd and the 3A didn’t have those fittings. The front left side looks to have the top off the tool box visible. Intriguing.

All one, or two remains?
The two 'halves' are not connected ... so two different vehicles?
That might account for the extra length? Perhaps the rear half is a Ford MH, Tractor No.2, hence the difference in fittings, Jack? The No.2 was a 135 inch wheel base tractor specifically built for 7MD, ie the NT. Very rare if the rear section is one of those. Mike Last edited by Mike Cecil; 02-06-20 at 21:33. |
