David,

We have seen this C8AX appear here on MLU for a number of times. It is also featured in the Blitz bits on Ebay Australia thread where Andrew posted it on 01-10-09. Judging by the phone number, it was put up for sale by the same seller.

I have just merged this thread with an earlier one on the same C8AX. When backtracking earlier threads, you will see Tony Smith identified this as Serial -747, Eng PR3963973, Date 5 June 43.

Now, who is going to save this nice little truck?!?!

HTH,
Hanno

Default Technical question....

Is there an explanation for this.....

When I look at the front fenders of a HUP compared to a regular.....(was going to say a real CMP)..... the front fenders on a HUP is about 3 inches narrower than the CMP fenders.

Now on the pictures posted of this elusive C8xa the front fenders are AS wide as a regular CMP..... they stick our about 3 inches wider.

Now the HUP body was fitted to a special unique frame with a curve/rise over the rear axle. the CMP is sturdier and flat with no curve.

The fender well in the cab/nose section of the HUP is also different to accomodate the slightly narrower stance of the front fender.

Now back to the pictures of the C8xa ......... the cab looks more like a cab 13 model....... yet the frame is the same as the HUP frame. Is the wheel width on the C8xa wider like a cab 13 so they could use a regular cab 13 ...?

If it was a cab 13 how was it attached to the smaller HUP frame..?

So much to learn... so little time....

Bob

Bob,

I noticed the same thing in C8AX production, and HUP Guru Brian came to the rescue:

Default What about underneath.....

....on the HUP the inner fender well... the triangualr curved pie shape is very different between a HUP and a cab 13...parts would not interchange....

....how is the under pinning done on the C8Xa....... is it more similar to the cab 13 or the HUP nose.....

....is the front axle of the C8Xa the same as the cab 13 or same as the HUP unique axle.....?

Thanks Hanno

The axles and chassis are the same as the C8A range.

I have been asked if I have reproductions of the parts manual for the C8AX. I understand that there is a photocopy out there (the requestor had one), but I haven't see either it or an original. The requestor and I exchanged several e-mails about it and we came to the conclusion that, based on the part numbers, the C8AX semed to be a C8A up to the top of the frame (including the steering gear and drivetrain) with a C15 (not C15A) cab. I don't recall us having discussed how the cab was mounted to see if it was done HUP style or C15A style.

The above can't be 100% true because it doesn't allow for the front axle engagement lever being mounted to the cab and passing through the floor.

Default Bitza

Thanks Hanno for that..I have the data it seems.

The question arises as to whether any DND papers exist on the C8AX as to why they were built as such bitzas.

Interesting Indian pattern wheeled carrier. I read it did not sell at its reserve of 4k and might be coming back up for sale, plus a host of other vehicles.

WW2 Chevrolet 4WD CMP. No reg or wof, though has the original plates, which will make it easy to put back on the road. Wooden deck is in good condition. Was running and then parked up due to a leaking radiator(original plus a good spare comes with the vehicle) and a leaking wheel cylinder. All the truck is there, some dents and a small amount of rust. 4 very good tyres. A very good original vehicle. I need to simplify my life, hence the reason for selling.

Default Wof

WOF = Warrant Of Fitness aka roadworthy cert. I think kiwi road use vehicles are required to have this done every six months.

Correct Mike. Anything first registered after 2000 has a 12 monthly WOF (Warrant of Fitness, not Willys of France) (including a 1986 ex Aust. Army Landrover (not required to be registered in Australia and first registered in New Zealand) There's one in our local branch of the Military Vehicle club.

Over here WOF jokingly stands for “Willys or Ford?!?”.
BTW, WOF stands for Willys Overland France (anorak remark )
