Hey Harry

I went with a carter because that is what the manual says should be on the truck.

As a sidenote does anyone have experience rebuilding the waterpump?

Hey Bruce

I am not sure, I see that advertised on a few sites that sell the old stuff but the Manual says 387-S so...

I attached the picture from the manual not sure if you tell much from it.

It's a Carter W1 you're after, they were used on CMP Chevs and most of the civilian 216s in the late 1930's. There are a bunch of them out there with a 'climate control' (basically and automatic choke) that are post war commercial Chev but would do in a pinch.

I did see those pricy rebuilds on e-bay. I wonder if that's because there aren't any rebuild kits left?

Default Carb

So..... I managed to find a carb on Ebay out of Winterpeg, he wanted 11.99 USD for it so I bought it, a rebuild kit is around 100 bucks, I am hopimg that after a clanup and rebuild that I will have a decent working carb for a heck of a lot less than 500.

Now I need to make a puller to get the pulley off my water pump.

Thank you for all the info and the email (Harry).

Gary

I think you will find the pulley spot welded on to the water pump, be careful.

Hey Harry

I have checked the pump and it does not appear to be welded, at least on the outside of the pulley, I would assume that that is where it would be welded if it was. The pulley would go on last and then get welded correct?

We did try using a puller that uses 2 of the four holes and added heat but it would not budge, I am going to make a puller that has 4 holes like the manual shows.

searching online so far water pumps with a core charge are like 350 US so lets see if I can get this one apart lol.

Gary, you will probably need to use a shop press to press the shaft out of the pulley. As for the price. Check eBay. There are a lot of the pumps listed there for very reasonable prices.

Parts list C15A-04 lists the Carter 387, followed by W1-518S, then W1-518SA all as first type carburetor. Then, as second type carburetor, the W1-589s is listed. The difference between first and second type is given as the second type is dustproof. Different parts packages were provided for servicing each of the carburetors.

Jordan: I think you are right on the money as nothing else is working right now.

Grant: Thank you for that info every tidbit helps.

Default Carbureter Clarification.....

Hi Gary: Just to clarify, the photo is NOT of a manual, but a package of assorted gaskets which Grant has clarified. (Thanks). If you decide to rebuild, send me your address and I'll mail then to you. I'll waive the $1.07 list price!!
I did check into rebuilding down this neck of the woods and I was quoted $430.00 to $440.00 for a Carter W1. I used this firm years ago and was very satisfied. Another option that occurred to me today was a firm I have used recently (C8A return brake spring). They are located in Missouri USA and attached is a copy of their carb list. Your call, but you've had a lot of good input. Good luck......Robert

PS: WTH is "freakin cereal" ?????

Hey Robert

Sorry, the first pic looked like a manual so I got confused lol. And "freakin cereal" is my grandchildrens way of saying serious lol ie: are you friggin serious. When I thought that was a manual I got a little excited and put that in instead of the proper spelling lmao...sorry.
