Government of Canada Announces the Return of The Cape Breton Highlanders

ST. ANN'S, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Jan. 16, 2011) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, announced today that the name of 2nd Battalion, The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton), an Army Reserve unit assigned to 36 Canadian Brigade Group, will be changed back to the Cape Breton Highlanders.

"I am delighted to be here to mark the official return of the Cape Breton Highlanders," said Minister MacKay. "Today's announcement is a gesture of pride and respect for enduring traditions. Once again, the people of Cape Breton will be able to recognize it as their own unit."

The Cape Breton Highlanders have a history of strong ties with the people of Cape Breton. From its birth in 1871, many Cape Breton families have seen family members serve with this illustrious unit. The Cape Breton Highlanders served abroad when called upon and served at home protecting vital installations in the industrial areas of Cape Breton. The unit fought in South Africa, the First World War, the Second World War, and Korea, and won a total of 56 battle honours. In 1955, the Cape Breton Highlanders were designated as 2nd Battalion, The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton).

"The people of Cape Breton have a long history of serving their country. With the return of the Cape Breton Highlanders its members will continue to serve at home and abroad while proudly wearing the name of their beloved island," stated Colonel Tom Stinson, Commander of 36 Canadian Brigade Group. "This change will continue to strengthen the bond between the Canadian Forces and the people of Cape Breton."

The Cape Breton Highlanders offer exciting employment opportunities, with competitive benefits, for citizens from the community who wish to serve their country.
