C-15A and F-15A Vehicle Weights
Hello Guys,
My question concerns the chassis weight of the C-15A Cab 13. At present, my C-15A Cab 13 is to be fitted with an aluminum radio box. I don't have a vehicle scale in my shop but the radio box can't weigh more than 600 - 800lbs. The vehicle plate indicates a chassis weight of 4960 lbs or 2255kg. In order to avoid a "Commercial" registration, (Registered Gross Weight 4500kg/9900lbs or greater) could I indicate a Registered Gross Weight of 8500lbs or 3864kg? This is what is indicated as the maximum allowable gross weight as per the General Motors of Canada issued vehicle plate. If I do so, would that not allow me to add roughly 2740lbs of fuel, gear, etc. to the vehicle before I come close to the 8500lb MAGW? (8500 - (4960 + 800)) Fully loaded, 8500lbs is still below 9900lbs if I had to go over an Inspection Station scale. Simply, is the 4960lb designation accurate for the Cab 13 C-15A? Is the Cab 13 F-15A heavier because of the flathead 8 Ford engine? Welcoming your wise comments!

My C15A tips the scale at 6900 lbs. empty. The GVW tag on the engine cover is 10,000.
I increased the licenced GVW to 15,000 to include the weight of the trailer and load of goodies I haul about. The more the weight the smoother the ride. The box on the back is an all steel floor and a wood and canvas structure. |

In B.C. with an antique plate we don't have to worry about the weight or licenced GVW.

Hello Harry,
Thanks for the information. I'm going to assume that my C-15A, with aluminum radio box, is going to be similar, if not less, than your C-15A at 6900lbs. This is still below way below the 9900lb "commercial" limitation. If registered at 8500lbs and it weighs 6900lbs, this would still leave 1600lbs of "dunnage" that could easily be transported. It would appear that in Ontario, if you can get the "antique" plate for the vehicle, this would also exempt one from CVOR requirement as well. Antique vehicles are usually owned by individuals and are not used for commercial purposes.

Indeed an Antique or Collector plate (separate categories here) cannot be used for commercial purpose.
I wouldn't be to sure about lighter if you have a wireless box like a Wire-5. My floor alone was made up of about 600 lbs. of steel. They are only skinned aluminum. |

The Truck, 15 cwt, Wireless is listed in Canada's Fighting Vehicles as having a laden weight of 10,670 pounds. That would be fully equippped with the 2 chorehorses and the radio (with lead-acid batteries). Admittedly this weight is for the steel skinned version and I can't find listings of the weights for the two styles of body or the amount saved by use of aluminum skins but Harry is right that the floor and framework remain steel. The bare 2K1 (aluminum) body remains a fair weight.
