Default Mounting new tyres

Any caveats about mounting new NDT's on combat rims? I've finally realized that I'm not going to find the correct pattern tyre any time soon, and I REALLY don't like driving around on ancient tyres. Wallace Wade is about 1/2 hour south of me and has the best price on 900 X 1600 NDT's so it looks like I'm going to have to settle for those.
Do the warnings for installing split rims hold for combat rims also, or can I just air them up without a cage? Any info/experiences greatly appreciated!
Have a profound, good Remembrance Day everybody!

Default What are you mounting the tires on?

Why ask is that I have had no real problems mounting 9:00x16s on my HUP. However the 9:00x16s on my C60L rims was much more difficult.

You will undoubtedly be pointed back to previous discussions of this issue.

Good luck

Phil,

I would have thought they were extremelly difficult, as a C60 has 20" rims. It would be like :dh: to fit

The HUP was originally fitted with 9.25-16 tyres, which comparing some current day survivors, was apparently smaller than a 9.00-16.
Could it also be that the 6 stud rim for the 9.25-16 is built to the US 16" rim dimensions, while the 8 stud rim for 9.00-16 is built to Cdn/UK WD 16" dimensions?

derek, be carefull from what i understand the US 900s are just slightly diffrent. when i bought my truck i was told that my wheels were turned down just a little to make the modern tires fit properly. other than that they should fit just fine. i have 2 NDTs on my truck and 2 NATOs.

The tyres currently on my C15 are:

Rear- Goodyear 900X16 NDT's circa 1950? Interestingly, the writing is all in Spanish, remember, my truck was ex-Argentinian Army.

Front- Same Goodyear 900X16 NDT's except that they are retreads. They have been ground smooth and have had a highway tread glued on. Strangest thing you've ever seen!

All tyres are stamped:

Solo para rin de 5 (degrees)
Militar
Reforzado

Since there are already 900X16's on the rims, I'm sure the new ones will fit. My only concern is the "Solo para rin de 5 (degrees)" which I take to mean "only for 5 degree rims" . Were there different degreed rims and should I be concerned?

Default British versus American

Yes the rims are different and some tyres are marked "for British rims only" and others are marked "for American rims only", or "for 6inch rims only. British type tyres are much heavier in the bead area than American type tyres. The rolling diameter of different makes of 9.00 x 16 tyres varies a lot. my experience is that British (and Canadian) tyres mount easily on U.S. rims (eg Dodge) and I believe that American tyres can be tight on CMP or British rims. Obviously both are built to different standards and when you bring bead locks, and runflats into the picture they would either not work or they just could not be assembled in a mixed situation.
To go back to Sappers original question, No you should not have to put a combat rim in a cage to inflate it. It is positively held together with bolts, as opposed to a rim assembly held together by a lock ring, which is only positively held together by inflation of the assembly. Combat rims were supplied to make tyre changing easy for those less mechanically inclined.

ow yea and derek, i have found out that military split rims are now illeagle here in TX. if you have them you can still use them, but you are not suposed to have new rubber installed anymore. the state (TXDOT) wants you to have combat or normal rims

Yes Derek, there are different sized rims. US 16" rims (and US made 9.00-16 tires) are 16" diameter at the bead and have a 5deg bead seat. Uk/Cdn WD 16" rims (and wartime Brit/Cdn tyres)are 16 1/4" dia at the bead and have a 0deg bead seat. Wallace Wade would only stock the US 9.00-16 so if your rims have been fitted with 5 deg tires, you're OK. If you need 0 deg tyres, I doubt you'll find them in the US. You'll have to try MRF Tyres.
PS while you're at Wallace Wade's, ask him if anything more is happening with the 10.50-16 Tyres.

Default My dum CMP rims....

Well my C15a cab 11 never went to school and flunked geometry
'cause I installed regular 9:00 x 16 tires removed from surplus M101 trailers and they went on very easily.... at least according to the farm tractor tire dealer I dealt with......

Now what really happened is after using the tire shop hydraulic press to remove the original 1940/43 tires I used a needle gun to remove some pretty heavy caked rust mixed with leftover tire bead canvas and dried rubber....followed by heavy sandblating.

Made sure the rim halves ringed like bell and sprayed with Phosphoric acid...sun dried.... and double coat of POR 15 gloss black..... I am sure that the removed rust accounted for the slip on fit. By the way the modern 9:00 x16 tires are 4 inches taller and about 13 inches more in circumference.

I doubt if with all the wear and tear on old CMP rims that modern tires would be hard to fit...... my experience anyways.

Hi Tony, sorry for the delay getting back to you re: 10.50-16 tyres. I've been working mega overtime getting the production line changed over at the G.M. plant in Arlington since they decided to move production of the '07 SUV's up a month. Wallace Wade is waiting for sufficient orders of the 10.50-16's to justify a run. He needs an approximate order of 150 tyres for the factory to produce them. Final price will be determined by the quantity ordered. The salesman I talked to (Chris) didn't have the quantity already ordered so I left a message for Wallace Wade to call me. I'll let you know if I learn anything further. The price of the 9.00-16's has risen from $80.00 a couple of months ago to $128.95 today, most likely due to price gouging by the oil companies. Chris told me that they will be rising a further 8% on Dec. 1!, so I'm ordering 5 today. Hope this info helps!

CHIMO!

P.S. Quick update. just got off the phone with Wallace Wade. He says an additional order of 50 or more tyres and they'll do a run of 10.50-16 chevrons. Won't know price until order is placed due to volatility of oil prices.

Default Approx. price.......

A long time ago I indicated I would take a set.... how do we know if our names were ever recorded by WW.....

.... also an approx. price would probably encourage others to decide on committing...... I personaly would be willing to commit a $20 to be registered and guaranteed a set.....

How do others feel??? where else are we ever going to see them again!!!!

Bob

According to Mike Kelly's measurements, both makes of rims have an angled bead seat, it's just that American wheels have a smaller diameter.
