Default Canadian Carrier data plate replacement

An MLU contributor has developed a method of reproducing data plates containing the specific details of an individual Canadian production series of Universal Carrier.

Each plate is custom produced with the data input as requested by the individual owner. That would include the model, serial number, hull number, engine number, contract, month and year of production.

The 'Publications' plates are also being produced.

I need the publications plate. Never understood why they are always missing.

Were the originals made from aluminium ? If so they would have fallen off due to dissimilar metal corrosion. This would explain why they are more often missing than not. If they are steel plates I bet the rivets holding them were of different metal... Same problem occurs.

Yep, I believe they are aluminum. I recall recovering armour with the lube plate on it from up North, and by the time Gord went to use the armour the plate had corroded off.

You may be right. Whatever they are, the elements do love eating them away if given a chance.

I finally made some of those plates. They are milled aluminum using a CNC router.

Please ask any questions or PM me if you need some made.

If you need an opinion you may ask Michael R. or Peter Duggan (Lynx mk 11, hull # 4225).

best regards
Markus

Default Recommendation

Guys,

I can personally attest to Markus's work. I would highly recommend his data and publication plates. The money that I spent on my plates was one of my better investments.

I've already got some request, so I put some general info up here.

As for publication plates I can offer the two versions for Carriers and the one for Lynx. Any other plate will have to be drawn first, for which I need at least some good pictures of an original.

The identification plate will have your personal numbers. You'll need to check them on your carrier. I can't tell you exactly where to find them, but there are a lot of people in this forum you can ask for help.

I do collect manuals and handbooks of WW2 era AFVs. If you have any you are willing to part with, I would happily (part)exchange them for plates.

Plates I already have a pattern ready are 60 EUR. Those with custom numbers for your specific carrier are 90 EUR. I can offer money transfer to my bank account or PayPal.

best regards
Markus

In this regard, I would suggest we set up a new thread for data plates, as these items can be missing from a lot of CMP's and WW2 armour these days.

It would also be great if, as Markus mentioned, we post detailed photos on the thread of surviving examples so they can be patterned.

This should also include CMP Body Data plates. I know Gord Falk is missing the Wilson Plate from the rear of his 2K1 Wire 5 Box, but we do know the correct serial number. Can anyone post a detail photo of one of these plates?

Agreed,

I do however have fears of folk taking ID's from other machines and adopting them for their own.

Not that I am saying any of you guys are dodgy... but it is on the World Wide Web and all that good stuff

Default Duplicating numbers

I am in for a set as well but as my carrier was buried underground for 30+ years, the numbers on the armour have pitted away so I will have to pick a number from random within the carrier serial number range for my Mk 1 carrier and the odds are slim that I will pick a number that may show up belonging to another carrier but it is possible so would like to see if everybody is willing to send in their serial numbers to start a data sheet so numbers don't get duplicated. What does everyone think of that? I am sure there are other carriers that have no data plates or serial numbers left on the edge of the front armour (replacement reproduction front armour) and will also have to pick a random number. Will wait and see what input comes forward but I am interested in a set of plates for my carrier!
Regards,Derk

I think you need more punctuation. I count 95 words in just one sentence.

What can I say,I'm longwinded!
2 other options to avoid using carrier serial numbers that are possibly out there is to make up a serial number range that is out of the normal serial number range of production carriers or adding an extra number to the made up serial numbers. Thoughts?

Just a thought on the risk of duplicated serial numbers.

When Canadian Bank Notes are damaged in production, they are pulled and the bill in question is reissued before destruction. The original serial number on the bill is reused, but an '*' is added at the end of the serial number to indicate it is a reissue.

If someone has a vehicle with missing serial number, but an approximate production time can be reasonably determined, we could look at a known registration listing of vehicle serial numbers in that time frame and pick one not already registered. Then add an '*' to the end of it. If a matching original serial numbered vehicle later turns up, the two numbers will still be distinctive.

One could consider using the lower hull number in the event other applicable numbers no longer exist.

Default Good idea!

That would work for me as I can read my lower hull number. Good Idea!

Default Data Plates

I have just received my new Data Plates from Markus and they are great, the next problem is what colour should they have been.
Looking through all the photos I have found of them they all have been painted the same colour as the carrier but one or two of the photos where the paint has been rubbed off there seems to be an original black background.
Any ideas please.

Stephen

Default Possibility of re-producing Data Plate?

Hi Marcus,

I have a Canadian C11AS (Station Wagon) Woodie that is missing its Data Plate.

I attach a copy of a similar plate, that is identical other than the Model, would it be possible to reproduce it with the following information for my vehicle.

SERIAL 17628 5/9/41
MOTOR 2D – 7225 - F
MODEL C11AS

Kind Regards,

Ian
