Unfortunately your "vintage" MV is not old enough to be classified as such under plans offered by Silver Wheels etc. My thoughts are you are going to have to pay full pop with your regular auto insurance provider...
And lots of insurance providers have all sorts of rules etc and don't like vehicles which don't fit into their "box", unlike providers who insure classic and vintage autos and understand their purpose and useage. Good luck

I found a receptive ear at Lant Insurance when I plated my M151A2. The lady I spoke to was Doreen:
doreen@lant-ins.ca I forget the sequence but I needed to have the vehicle safetied, then registered and insured, or was it insured then registered. Either way, she asked for copies of the bill of sale and the inspection, as well as photos on four sides, with the hood up and the interior. As long as I have a daily driver, the policy is about $150. Your LSVW and my M151A2 were both sold off by DND with limited paperwork. Mine was rebuilt in Alberta and has a foil replacement VIN tag. It came with a mistake on the previous registration which between myself, the inspector and the insurer. The licence bureau couldn't record it by make and model, so the certificate is truncated to an M15 by AM General. Your LSVW will be something similar.

If you can wait 3 years, you're good to go with Lant. Much cheaper.
Perhaps insure it at regular rates for those 3 years? Good luck.

Is the issue that you cannot get antique/collector type insurance, or you cannot get any insurance to drive it on the road at all?

The minimum required for Ontario will be liability insurance regardless of whether or not it is used on or off road, Lant will not insure off road vehicles period.
Lant is the local provider for the Silver Wheels" program for vintage/heritage vehicles etc. There is however a very specific set of conditions which must be met to qualify. Terry, your M151 for example is old enough to fall into their program. I fear an LSVW is not,as a 1993 is only 23 years old. Lant stipulates 25 years old before it can be classified Antique/Collector. As mentioned in an early reply, it may be difficult to find a sympathetic regular insurer in the meantime due to the unique features of the LSVW. There are many ways in which they may view this truck and classify it accordingly or deny coverage outright, eg decide that it fits a commercial vehicle class due to weight. Check www.lant-ins.ca for further details.

Do you have an optional for occassional day or week permits? Here in BC a Temporary Operating Permit is $25-$35/day and for vehicles I drive only a couple days a year, I get a TOP.

LSVW insurance
Well thank you all for your much appreciated feedback. Today I received some good news. My broker told me Echelon will insure the vehicle as a collector vehicle for $200 a year based on the usual limited use scenarios. At least it's a start. However, before proceeding they want a vehicle appraisal (value must be over $7500), the ownership must be in my name (so I have to complete the transfer into unfit), vehicle has to be certified. Im sure as some of the 2800 LSVW trucks the DND is selling make their way into private hands and we start seeing them on our roads getting insurance will become a lot easier.

I use a company called Hagerty for my M38Cdn. Same as the previous owner did. They seem to be North America wide so they might be worth checking out. My premium is just over $300 for full coverage and comes with roadside assistance. They will also want a value, pictures and a copy of your drivers abstract to prove you're not a liability. And the nice part is that there's no limit on km's per year.

Lant Insurance & Hagerty are now one company in Canada. If you go to;
https://www.lant-ins.ca/?gclid=CIXv5...FQKTaQodRwkMEQ you will find a "Quick quote" form. There is a "Special Interest 15 to 24 years old" category. I tried a 1993 vehicle valued at $8000 with a 45 year old driver & the result was $252/year. |
