Thumbs up Cool!

Thanks Frank ...

likes references like these Of course my memory is unpredictable so it's nice to have this here.

It's also good to finally know what SUNRAY refers to. COMMANDER huh? (depends on who he's talkin' to? Yes? )

hmmmm... Don't be so joyful there, Missy. Jon was refering to my original post.

You see, one of us was going to post the appointment titles but I have super high speed Internet, so I beat him to it.

So there... you're not that good.

Careful, Frank...there be dragons in the algae covered swamps where the yappy missy lurks. For her, frying pans are but sinkers on her 100# test line.

With my aviation interests, perhaps I should be CONROD.
I thought of SHELDRAKE with my arty tractor, but there are several of us in that category... Hmmmm... or perhaps it's just for you genuine ex-service people...

I did some research on my grandfathers regiment (8th Recce). Reading the war diaries I got used to seeing Sunray and Sheldrake, likely others as well that I didnt recognize at the time. Remember one said the really big Sunray was coming to visit but dont know who they refered to. Very interesting reading. Brian

Default Appointment Titles Qualifications

Hi All
Don't forget that the 2IC (second-in-command Kartmann) is qualified by the term "minor". so where Sunray is the big chief, Sunray Minor is the 2IC. I was a Pronto Minor.

Unhappy poop

Ah, but alas oh Master Salesman Bob, there already exists a SUNRAY MINOR ... and it is
NOT moi.

is appropriately descriptive is it not?
You all call me all sorts of things anyways But I kinda like the variety myself of all sorts of things myself ...

The handle VETS DOTTIR is the permanant one I don't want to lose in here, in honour of my Dad and his memory, and my "military research" point of being here to begin with. Funny ... I joined here regards my Uncle and almost used the handle VETS_NEICE ... but my Dad needs my honour and respect too.

Default Minor

Hi Kartmann
The term "minor" is applicable to each Appointment Title. Using Sunray as an example, the MLU Sunray is Geoffaloff Billington Spin Ball ergo the Boss. His second-in-command, ergo Sunray Minor is ????. All the Appointmant titles are designated to the various Corps, eg. Shelldrake is Artillery, Pronto is Signals. In the military I was Pronto Minor, in other words I was the Infantry Battalion Radio Sergeant.

Thanks for the explanation Bob

I kinda like FOXHOUND if I had to choose one ... I sort of "represent" RIFLEMAN EDWARD SMITH in here "FOXHOUND ------ Infantry Rep" but as a civi, I haven't "earned" any of those military handles.

Default Kartmann's Appointment Title

Hi Kartmann
Go for a variation on the theme, become "BLOODHOUND".
Attributes according to the dictionary "prized for its keen scent and perseverance, now specially trained for tracking human beings".
The first part is applicable to your family research, with the second part applicable to those who give you a hard time (if in fact you consider them to be "human beings").

Default Forget BLOODHOUND

Hi again Kartmann

When we had recruits out in the bush for the first time we used to tell them to beware of "Woffle Worms, Drop Bears and the most dangerous of all, the SWAMPDOG". These of course are all ficticious Oz animals but the recruits were convinced and used to spend some nights without sleep.

I think SWAMPDOG is most appropriate for you as your description of your residence reminds me of the Swamp in M.A.S.H. and Dog is synonymous with hound. The Swampdog has all the attributes of a Bloodhound but the name is far less boring.

So therefore dear Kartmann I dub thee "SWAMPDOG".

I'm sure other Ozzie members will contribute to the definitions of this name.

In the Canadian Forces, we had a similar ficticious animal which manifested itself as the "snow snake", found mostly where one found yellow snow. This beastie could terrify a recruit since, as they were told, the animal only struck whilst one piddled in the snow.

What was legendary was the reaction of U.S. Marines who came up to winter-train with us and swallowed the snow snake story hook, line and sinker...

they were known to slip into sleeping bags in the dead of night and to lurk around the cookset due to the heat, especially when a "Young Lad" was on stove watch and to fall on their prey from tree branches............I can remember many a pale looking "Young Lad" and some sleeping bags getting the crap beat out of them........
