Default Willy's Jeep Engine

Just found out my L134 is no good. Sent it in for a rebuild only to find out it is in rough shape. Cracked block, bent rods and Cam.
So I need a engine. I'm in Ontario just north of Toronto. I'm facing a stalled project until I can get one. Please email me at sdunnage@Rogers.com or message me.
Thanks
Sean

Default Engine

I would prefer a running engine either rebuilt or suitable for rebuilding. As for the right engine (42-45) it all depends on how much it ends up costing. I'm trying to do a decent job but money is always a factor.

Thanks
Sean

There is a military generator for sale in London Ontario that uses a flathead military motor. This one is reported as being a low hours M38 engine. These originally had WW2 engines in them, so you'll want to have a look and see if it's actually an M38 engine as the seller reports, or a WW2 engine. Price is only $1000, so either way it is a bargain.

Edited to add: I noticed it has a data plate from the French army, so it is possibly a hotchkiss era engine. Unsure if that will be M38 or WW2 vintage.

Rob, as far as I know the 201 Hotchkiss engine is the same. If not, it will only be the incorporation of the improvements (maybe gear driven cam etc)

If it has a French Army data plate it could be a WW2 rebuild, or be of post WW2 French manufacture. In the latter case you will have an engine which is practically identical to the WW2 Willys (not: Willy's ) engine, except for casting markings and some technical improvements. Hotchkiss production never progressed to types after the MB, they just improved on the existing WW2 design.

In either case, at $1000 it sounds like a good buy.

I had a look at the pictures, and see two data plates. The first one denotes the ownership (Armee Francaise) and type of equipment (PE-95). The date on it is 1963. Combined with "ERGMT/NO" (see below), I would say the date is a rebuild date, unless anyone knows when the last PE-95 generator sets were built.

The second picture shows a plate low down on the engine. I cannot read the details, except "E.R.G.M." which stands for Etablissement de Réserve Générale du Matériel Automobile, the French Army's Materiel & Logistics organisation. They ran huge rebuild programmes on WW2 materiel to re-equip the French Army after WW2, and also rebuilt Hotchkiss M201's (post WW2 produced MB jeeps) until they were taken out of service between 1981 and 2000.

The original engine block data plates were replaced when the units were rebuilt by E.R.G.M. This also recorded additional information about the rebuild like rebore / regrind information for the cylinders and crankshaft. So chances are this is a rebuilt MB engine, or a rebuilt M201 engine. Again, in either case, if it is indeed has "very few hours since a complete rebuild", it is a good buy.

Note: the 3rd picture comes from the excellent site m201.com - everything you ever wanted to know about the M201 jeep!

HTH,
Hanno

At the asking price of 1K, the generator is a steal if the motor is good. The price of machine work and engine parts these days is considerable.

Thanks for the info Hanno. I have seen the odd Hotchkiss over here, but really did not know that much about them.

There is also another flathead on Kijiji pulled
From a M38 that is advertised as a recent rebuild for $1000.
Again, a steal.

all depends on where the block is cracked,I stitched up a crack in my ford jeep in the n1980s and am still running it it is simple enough to do yourself, cost of conrods and cam wont come to $1000, John.

No offense but a cracked and repaired block is still a cracked and repaired block.
I can guarantee that you will not rebuild a jeep engine for anywhere near $1000.
The hot tanking, magnaflux and machine work alone will cost that and then add the price of parts. Last time I checked a rebuilt short block was around $3000 plus...
A friend of mine tears down Ford flahead V8s for something to do and looks them over before deciding on sending them out for cleaning and magnaflux. He usually has an average of leas than 50% that come back useable. This after all his labour involved in the teardown. He tells me that it is a couple hundred bucks gambled eaxh and every time he sends one out.

Default Got one

Thanks to everyone. A kind MLU guest has hooked me up with a nice MB engine. I'll need to get it checked but it looks pretty darn good.
