Default Box

hi Colin ,

I had to make a battery box for my C8 , I had a loan of an original to copy . I did scribble up some drawings of it .

It was fairly easy to make . I found original type catches at my local hardware store , exactly the same as the WW2 ones !

Ian Richardson of Carnforth in Lancashire , is restoring a C8 , like yours . He kindly spent some time drawing up the body of Nick's C8 , when it was owned by somebody else .

Is the 1A2 body on yours original ? Or a repro . The only other one I have heard of with the original 1A2 in situ is Nick Bullock's C8 . Maybe you should visit Nick up in the wilds of Yorkshire.....

I'll send you a CD if you give me your postal address ?

Cheers Mike,
I've been in contact with Nick and that would definately be a special visit, takes about 5-6 hours to drive up there.
I think I'll have to do it though for my sanity if nothing else, I need so many details of the little bits and pieces which i could get in one swoop with Nicks wagon.
Unfortunately the rear is not original it should have the longer back with the internal spare wheel, but this is how we bought it and I can't afford to change it back!
Thats a very nice C8, see your clearing the garden then!

Default Is it the same as the standard Pattern 12

Hi - If the box is the same as the standard box used on Chevy Pattern 12. If so I have detailed photos and set of drawings that I can post.

Default Cover???

Phil

Do your drawings include the cover for the box???? I have a bottom only....

I am assuming that you are referring to the box mounted inside the cab in the case of your cab 12........ which I intend to use on the step plate mounted under the driver's side on my cab 11.

As far as I know its the standard box fitted inside the cab. Any drawings/pics would be great.

Default Yes drawing includes the top

Yes, I had to fabricate an entire new box including top. Drawing includes the top, supports, end plates, and sides. I'll try and get them posted on my web site this weekend. Also have to finish checking dimensions of the drawings of the dog house.

Default What about cab 11....

Any comments on what battery box was used onthe cab 11 when the battery was mounted under neath the driver side on the back of the runnning board similar to a cab 13....?????

In the absence of better info I will replicate the inside box of the cab 12 and mount on the running board bracket....

That's interesting Bob I had assumed both 11 and 12 cab Chev's had them in the cab. I never seen a step mounted box before do you have any pictures ?

Default battery box

Hi colin . I aquired this nasty item some time ago to use as a pattern for my C8. The battery box was changed long ago for a larger unit to take a bigger battery...Needless to say its still sitting on the shed floor.... Maybe it'll give you an idea what the box looks like.

kind regards

nick

Default Pictures... I wish I had....

Hi Peter

Like all older trucks mine was modified..... but there seems to be evidence of a properly installed shelf for a battery box on my cab 11 similar to a cab 13........ did the old rural mechanic follow his experience from a cab 13....?? I dunno!!!

But my floor of the cab 11 has no bolt holes that woudl indicate a battery box inside....???

Nick what you are showing is a typical.... albiet slighty modified by time...... inside battery box......

Of all the various manuals I have.... none show the location of the battery box for the cab 11....... sure I have seen cab 11 CGT with the inside box but never for the C15a cab 11.....

Personnaly with the confined space in the cab I would much prefer the outside location......

Of all the old archive pictures... action shots or staged pictures I have never seen conclusive evidence of the location on a cab 11...or the shape of the box.

Any one..... comments

Default Hi bob

Well I had never thought to look for evidence of the battery box location, I'd just always assumed it to be located inside the cab. But as you say the documentary evidence is thin on the ground when you come to look for it. The parts list gives little away in terms of pictures, though does mention fender mounted battery boxes on type two cabs which I take to mean the No 13 cab. then in a 1940 instruction book, Its a 1940 edition, presumably first edition and marked for ford and chevrolet! vehicles. there was the following picture. I don't ahve a scanner so the already poor picture has turned out even worse... Looking at it is hard to see which side the hindges are on since it sits on appx inch high top hat section 'side ways on' to the cab if that makes sense. presumably the driver had the catches on that side.. thought he pictures can't confirm this..

there must be an original box in situ somewhere? As for external fitment of battery box on 11/12 cab vehicles..? I don't believe I have seen any. Hope that this helps

kind regards

nick

Thumbs up Nice picture Nick

Nothing like getting all close and personal with an 11 cab

you may find the next set of images of some use the first picture here is of a battery box in place on a 11 cab C15A that I used as a parts donor for mine. This truck was interesting in that it was a very early C15A 11 that had had the 12 cab front end field mod kit fitted to it so it had alligator hood with fixed screen without North African mods.

The working drawings are made from the box in the photo and show box, the brackets it sits on ( these are cut down seat runners), lid and then a cutting and folding plan to make up the box as per original.

Pete

First the photo of the box in place from the passenger side

Default I suspect reason for battery box relocation

I suspect that relocating the battery box out of the cab may even been common in the military because of the difficulty in removing the engine dog house panels.
Back when I was fabricating a new engine side panel I discovered that it was necessary to remove the transmission cover to remove or install the engine side cover. To remove the transmission cover it is necessary to unbolt the battery box from the mounts. I can see after doing this only once or twice you would relocate the battery to the running board bracket.

Interesting Peter that your box is fabricated differently from one of the boxes that I have, also I discovered that the two boxes I have are slightly different in dimensions. Probably differences from suppliers as I’m sure that these small parts were farmed out to small sheet metal shops.

Default F8 interior

I have posted a large pic of the interior of a new F8 which, although the seat is folded down shows the box. It's too large to put on the forum so you can see it here.

Default Thanks for the invaluable info...

NICK...... what manual was that inside cab picture taken from???
particularly what is the date on the manual.....

Peter.....thanks for the sketch and the picture of the original box.

Keith...... Nice picture also...... in Nick's pictures the seats looked like leather or simulated leather...... but could not make out the type of covering on the seats in your pictures.

I am really confused about where to stick my battery box..... the cab space is so small...... in fact with the additional two winch levers in my cab 11 it maybe impossible to place one.

On the other hand if I select the driver's side running board the cab 11 box is not vey pratical has I will not be able to lift the cover for servicing...... so I may go for the cab 13 box with the removable cover.....

So Phil...... where will you place your battery box???

Thanks for the information guys.

Bob C.

Default So Phil...... where will you place your battery box???

Well for now it is mounted in the cab. Only time and the number of times that I have to remove it to get at the engine will tell if it stays there.

As to what box would be used if battery box is relocated to running board. I would think that the Pattern 13 box would be the logical choice. If you need drawings for that check http://canadianmilitarypattern.com/PostingPage3.html
