What was the range finder mounted to if anything? I am trying to figure out what unit or trade would have used it?

The short black backlite parts are handles. This pattern could be hand-held or mounted in the centre to a tripod as needed since it is only three feet long.

The 1 metre model has a range scale to 20,000yds. There was also a 80cm version to 15,000yds.

In Aust service, they were commonly used by the Machine Gun Battalions and the Anti-Tank Regiments, but could have equally been used by Field Artillery Batteries or Cavalry Units. They had fallen from practical use by the time of the Pacific theatre.

Default Canadian Rangefinder

The Canadian ones made by REL came in either a fiberglass tube or a wooden chest without all the nice accessories. The white marks on the lid of the box are for calibrating the thing.

All previous info is accurate to my knowledge about who used them and how (anybody have a spare tripod I could buy?)

Somebody should buy this off Eric. It looks like a nice example save the chipped handle.

My father has one that has had a prism professionally rotated in the mechanism so it can accurately measure ranges within a km. I don't remember what the case looks like, but it isn't the big one posted above.

My example was made by REL under license from B&S during the war. But it has additional Chinese markings since it was intended for lend lease like the Bren guns and Stens produced in Canada for the same purpose. Since it was determined the Chinese wouldn't really put them fully to use against the Japanese, they were never sent.

It has the fibre transit tube. Have a nice tripod but sorry to say it isn't a spare.
