Default Chevrolet C60S Restoration

Hello, Its been a while since I have been on here. I restore WW2 vehicles for a living, and I was recently asked to go and visit a farm in the county of Norfolk, here in the UK. Well on arriving after a good chat and a coffee, i was taken to a barn to look over the truck in question well after a good going over, I came to the conclusion that it was well worth restoring. It was only when i collected and got the vehicle home and starting a blog on another site I found out how rare the vehicle is, or the body. Well here are a few pics, the state of play at the moment is I am still on the strip down, but its in a quew of vehicles waiting to be completed. I should be on the rebuild full time in about 6 weeks, but may well get odd bits done during other work.

Howard,

great to see you here. You really have a good project there; well done.
We spoke about the rare 3C1 bodies on HMVF; you should be able to find some more info on the body here on the forum.

Default Wow

What a starting point Howard.... it appears to be in amazing condition and very complete.

This is the second Cab 11/12 truck I have seen on this forum with the smaller headlights.

Im curious to know if they are an original fitment?

Hello Not sure about the headlights the small ones are Jeep, so not sure if they were fitted after the 41 rebuild or a later fitting. I now have some large Headlights to fit with the blackout guards. Ive also got the correct front side lights and rear lights. Ive managed to get more done and started the strip down. Howard

Default Can someone explain.......

Appreciate the pictures Howard as I am working on a 1940 cab 11 Chev.

Now....could some one with good eyes confirm that the shifter for the tranny has the "reverse lock" on the wrong side????? mine is on the left of the shift lever??????? Does the lock lever work on iether side????? would be akward to activate the lever with your tumb.

I have also taken note of the location for the battery inside the cab right next to the 2 speed T case shift tower........ I relocated mine to the (cab 13) running board location as the 12 volt battery is too large for the original space ....... this is the first time I have seen an orignal set up.

Cheers
Bob C

Hello Bob your right about the shift lever I had it out earlier its not in the correct way round, I removed it to remove a panel. I must have been getting tired at that point its been a long day. Yes the battery box sits on the two channels behind the gear lever. Howard

Mine is on the right of the stick and it is easy to operate, never had a problem with it.

Hi Robert

That implies that the reverse lock lever WILL work on either side when inserted in the tranny tower!!!!!! Interesting.

You're not mucking about, Howard!

Great to see this progress, going this quickly you will remember where all that Cab 12 tinwork goes when the time comes to put it back together.

Hanno

PS: here's a "then" picture of a Ford F60S with the same 3C1 body to keep you motivated

Hello Hanno, I know what you mean there are alot of cab parts alone never mind every thing else. The cab has come apart four ways. I have taken lots of piuctures so it should be to bad. I should have an industrial steam cleaner coming Monday or tuesday next week or get rid of the dirt. It will then go under the blaster. Well we had a good day yesturday, I bought some angle iron and made up an engine cradle, we then lifted the engine from the chassis and fitted it to the cradle. Rest of the day was spent unbolting other parts, rear and front shocks, all side step brackets, front propshaft. Well thats the state of play to date. Howard

Hello Alex

Yes she has really cleaned up a treat. The truck seems so far to be in pretty good order. I do need a parts manual, so if anybody out there has a parts book with the parts numbers i would like to buy one. I need to give Dirk an order but he needs the parts numbers.

Thanks Howard

Well more work has been carried out on the C60s. Ive broken down the front axles, and now need the oil seals that fir in the axle. Ive also broken down the transfer box and need the oil seals for that. I also need the oil seal for the gear box. I have also started cutting out the rotten metal from the floor of the body, the main middle section of sheet metal will be staying as its not to bad. Apart from Dirk does any body know of another supplier of the oil seals please. Are post some more pics soon. Howard

Well I have finally got the seals sorted and they are on order. Ive also managed to get more parts blasted and painted. Ive also gone through the engine and fitted new seals and gaskets. Ive also got that painted in my Engine grey. Hoping to get the gear box sorted this week, i can then think about getting the engine and gear box fitted back into the chassis. Will update as the rebuild goes.

Howard, Are you planning to put the truck on the road?
I don't know your laws, but over here we are not allowed to use copper brake lines any more. It might pay to check.
The truck is looking great!

Lynn,
No issues with copper brake lines in the UK.
It seems Australia and NZ authorities don't like the idea, but copper has been used for many years and I have never experienced a problem in 49 years of vehicle work. Different matter with steel though, seen plenty of rusted ones fail, from the inside too.

As you know though Richard, copper work hardens and can crack, if not properly supported. I guess the difference between the two countries is that we don't salt our roads.
Anyhow good to hear that Howard doesn't have to back track.

Default Copper Brake Lines

Lynn, you can now buy American made copper brake line tube that is specially made for brake lines, it is all proofed and marked as such, so gone are the days of using refrigeration tubing, it is of course a little more expensive, but made for the job and accepted for WOF.
