Default Hand Water-pump

This interesting contraption recently saw light of day after spending many years in an Army warehouse. Does anyone have any clues to it's age or uses?

It is a hand pump, broadly the same dimensions as the WW2 Air pump used to inflate tyres. It is constructed of approx 2" brass with cooling fins around the body. I has two screw-threaded connections with a check valve, which I would presume are a suction and pressure side.

The threaded connections on the hose are the same thread as on a 2Gal POL can, which could suggest use with a 2 gal water can.

Cast into the feet of the pump is the Manufacturer's details: "Mfd by Young Radiator Co, Racine Wic, USA".

While this might initially suggest it was used to drain and re-fill radiators, it may just be that Young Radiator were a suitably experienced contractor to produce water pumps for other purposes. "Radiator" may also be the Domestic/Commercial heating device, rather than an Automotive Radiator.

Default Hmmm

Well I deal with some of this stuff daily.

The fins round it are to let heat in to the pump, rather than radiate it out, and the metal tubework suggests it would be for pumping something that might tend to freeze an ordinary pump.

Rocket fuel (hic!), liquid Nitrogen, something like that.

Tony,

This seems to be a 'Pump, Liquid, No.2' used to replenish the recoil system of the 25 pounder field gun/howitzer.

You are missing one cover ( similiar to the one on the other side ) and the delivery hose, which connected to the recoil sytem reservoir through a No. 14 or 17 adaptor.

Good Find!!!
