Default Canadian carriers Lend/Lease to Russia

Much is made of American Lend/Lease to Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries. Deservedly so. Perhaps not as well known is Canada's contribution to the war effort through Lend/Lease of trucks, tanks, and carriers to Russia. Here are three pictures of Canadian carriers in Russian hands.

Pic one: If this carrier is a Mk1, then that makes three Mk1's in this shot.

Default Picture three

Winter shot of a Canadian carrier. Note the "white wash" over the paint in this picture.

I believe there were some Mk II's shipped from Canada to Russia. There is an excellent website which I haven't had time to explore in it's entirety titled "Engines of the Red Army" which lists all Lend/Lease vehicles. I believe Canadian MkIIs were mentioned.

Bruce, I think you'll note that the lack of a pistol grip rules out a Bren. The Russians used the similar looking Degtyerev DP Model 1928 throughout the war and beyond. If you look closer you'll see this mg has a round receiver as opposed to the Brens square receiver.

hey
i would hazard to say that the first one is a british carrier due to some of the bolt holes, etc....

and the 2nd is a MK I* that was rebuilt in england to mk II specs.

there was a rush to get rid of all the british carriers and upgrade to canadian carriers durring that time.

im not saying that canadian carriers were not shipped over there.

I am sorry, but they look very Canadian to me.

The carriers in these pictures were identified as Canadian, although of course I have found many mis-labeled pictures on the internet; case-in-point, my thread regarding trucks bound for Alaska on the S.S. Leonard Wood. Personally, I'm not familiar enough with carriers to know the finer points between British and Canadian production.

According to their WD numbers, pic 1 is a British made MkI (by Aveling Barford), pic 3 is a Canadian made MkI (Ford Canada) and pic 2 "looks" like a Canadian made later MkI*. Hope this helps.

Nigel

Default Soviet lend Lease 2 Gallon Water Container

A number of years ago I purchased this GSW 43 stamped 2 Gallon Water Container, the added joy being that it contained markings in Cyrlic.

The markings say that the container is for water and in cold weather don not fill past 9/10 full.

I got to www.photobucket.com and download the image in that program. Once downloaded, you have a choice of four file formats, I take the format listed at the bottom, copy the format text and then paste it into my text.

It costs nothing to have a photobucket account and you can download the images in your account into most online forums.
