Stuart track
I,m just listening to the latest episode of "Up the Track".
Its a real life story from those that were there of the highway from Adelaide to Darwin during WWII. It can be downloaded from this link an extremely interesting series of radio broadcasts. http://www.abc.net.au/rn/hindsight/default.htm |

Thanks for that link, Graeme.
What fascinating stories they told. When I was a kid, my Dad was based at Terowie with the AIF in the mid north of SA, so I can sort of relate to a lot of those happenings. Terowie was a Change of Gauge depot & everything going north had to be trans-shipped over to the narrow gauge line. I recall freight trains which "seemed" miles long, loaded with Guns, Tanks, Carriers, Trucks, Wiles Cookers etc, etc You name it, it was there. It was also a large Staging Camp where Troops were held pending rail transport north & was the Station where Gen. MacArthur made his famous, "I will return..........." speech to the media of the day. The platform exists today, albeit in a bit of a sorry state, & a stone with plaque marks the spot where he allegedly stepped off the train. |

Add my thanks neat site
Graeme thanks for a very interesting link. Spent the afternoon listening to the 3 segments on the Stuart Tract.
One again one or our merry band of MLUers has come up with an "off the track" source of information. The ABC Hindsight series looks like it has many hours of enjoyable listening. Cheers Phil
