M100 cdn
Hello
By chance has anybody been able to find the number of M100 trailers which Canada built? Or something close by using CFR's? I am also looking for mods, variants etc for an article for CMP. Thanks Eric

M100 CDN trailers
Hi Eric, Over the year I have kept info on 65 M100CDN trailers I have owned or seen in southern Ontario: The data plate dates ranged from 12/52 to 3/53. Lowest CFR was 70078. The highest CFR was 71252. The lowest serial number was 072 and the highest was 1252. There is no direct correlation between the CFR number and the serial number. Several trailers had CFR stamped on the tongue that did not match the Crown Assets paperwork or the CFR chalked on the trailer at the time of sale suggesting that the DND license plates (with the 5-digit CFR used as the license plate number) got mixed up over the years. The only example of a serial number matching the CFR number was on trailer 53-71252 with a serial 1252 and delivered date 3/53. Based on trailers seen in southern Ontario I would guess that the total production was 1252 or a few more...... Brian

At one time I had a trailer with serial number 19, and, as Brian mentioned, the CFR did not match the serial on the drawbar, which was 70019. Stripping the paint did reveal that number on the body however. I suspect that the first batches of trailers out of MCI were more likely to match or come close to matchng CFR/serial, but as production sped up, the assignment would have varied more.
In the early 80s, as part of a re-life project for the trailers (and perhaps a little make work project for civilian companies) the majority of the trailers went downtown for sandblast and paint. This resulted in the plates getting mixed up. I mostly used the stamped CFR to try and properly match the plates to the trailers, but found several trailers whose stamped CFRs did not exist in our area. So some of the mix-up appears to have happened years earlier. Scotty posted all the available serials in an old thread years back indicating somewhere around 1400+ trailers. Thanks for the link to a previous topic. Still looking for any details on mods and variants. Saw Scottys list and tried to download it but must have been too large, have asked him for a copy of it. Shame the exact numbers are not listed on the vehicle data sheets as they did for the 1/4 ton 4x4 and other vehicles. Thanks Eric

Hi Eric, I'm in possession of 53-71069 and it is fitted as a linesman trailer with a few mods on it including;
a) side compartments created on the inside by running metal front to back along the beveled portion of the box, both sides. The unfortunate part it also caused two holes to be drilled through the data palte for bolts b) electrical ground lug on right front corner c) large metal loops installed on each corner outside of the box Tom Clark has found a picture of it in a manual somewhere which I still need to get a copy of. I don't think (?) it had a unique ECC though.

M100 photo
I came across this photo I had in my album from 20 years ago when I was visiting the Moose Jaw Armouries. An early serial number on an M100 trailer. Not sure if it was still in service then or part of the vehicle collection. Rob Love would know the story on it as he spent a few hours working on vehicles & trailers there at one time!

Here are the 3 M100 trailers I once owned;
The green one:CFR #53 70300 serial number 0310 91T:CFR # 53 70768 serial number 0778 I no longer have the info for the 3rd trailer as I never restored it and used it so have no paperwork on it anymore. Has the Airborne lifting rings attached. Derk

Eric; Here is a bit of info that may help with your research.
I have acquired an M100 trailer from another MLU member who very thoughtfully had it stored inside for many years. The trailer retains many or all of its in-service attributes. As mentioned above, the trailer is S/N 1250 and has a matching CFR of 53-71250 stamped on the drawbar. It has 18 SVC tac symbol, which might be the former 18 Service Bn (now 18 Service Company) from Thunder Bay. Any other thoughts? There is/was some stenciling on the rear panel (under the CFR plate), that says something that includes the words: plug, before, and fording. Im assuming it is a warning to open and close the floor drain plugs before and after fording. Does anyone know the exact wording of that text? I plan to leave the coloring and markings "as is", so I don't want to do any sanding on the rear panel at this point. There is also a painted over diamond-shaped decal in the upper right corner of the rear panel, which Im guessing is the Mobile Command insignia. It also has the tie-down loops attached to the front corners. It was equipped with a convoy light (the white target and light bracket are still there, but the light is missing).

Eric,
Would like to contribute an M-100... In-Service shot. MilCon 83… Reserve Units from all over BC. put these little trailers to good use. Our Lt. from C Scot R is enjoying a well deserved lunch break… steak sandwich I believe…..but…..still On-Net A few minutes after this shot was taken…he went back to herding cats… Sorry..I mean training summer students.. And the ammo and fuel was brought up to forward units. The M100's were an extremely useful piece of kit.. ..basically doubled the load a Jeep could haul. |

18 Service Battalion was in Thunder Bay (now 18 service Company as part of 38 Service Battalion) and your M100CDN was disposed of out of Winnipeg which administered that unit.
