As Clive and Rob have shown, there are 2 types of 40mm Ammo boxes. The C219 is for 24 rounds in single tubes and the C216 is for 6 clips of 4 rounds. The C216 explains the unusual assymetrical pressings in the box, which is the same for both boxes.
The C219 has spacer panels either side for the tubes and footman loops for a cloth tape to tie the tubes in place. The C216 has slots provided for fibre/ply spacer sheets to hold the noses of the shells.

This C216 box is Australian made by General Motors-Holden's at their Woodville plant. It has the same pressings as my Canadian made C219, except for the numbers/lettering ID'ing the box. This came from the RAN, who have kindly painted it Naval grey, so no markings are visible, but some raised paint can be made out beneath the top layer of paint. I'll give it a fine sand and see what comes out.
