Default LRDG Chevrolet 1533X2 spare wheel carriers

When first issued it was standard practice to store the spare wheel/s between the tailgate and the wheel box on the left hand side of the load bed. This allowed easy and rapid access. The wheel box was modified so that the rear of it was sloped to allow the spare to fit. As the troopers gained experience with the trucks over numerous Patrols they modified the trucks to allow more efficient use of the space. One of the modifications was to stow spare wheels outside the load bed, freeing up room for other items whilst still giving good access. The standard fit seems to be 2 spare wheel mountings, although 1 is not uncommon. The LRDG fitters designed various ways to attach the wheels to the outside of the load area, producing different types of fittings. The basic designs included a lower support either made from 2 pieces of angle iron or a fabricated triangular support. This took the majority of the weight. The top bracket is harder to clarify. I have only found one fuzzy photo of the bracket without a spare wheel attached. Whether the metal plate of the body was strong enough to allow this support to be bolted/welded straight onto it or it had a reinforcing plate or a welded support to take the weight is unclear. I can only find one poor photo of the interior of a truck showing the internal area of bracket (Barce raid burned out truck) but it may only show 3 bolts to retain the bracket.
There may be other styles of spare wheel carriers as shown in the Photo of, I believe David Lloyd-Owen, on the big raids of September 1942.
Locations vary for the spare wheel carriers mostly on Radio trucks that mounted one at the rear on the right hand side, or 2 on the left hand side. Breda gun trucks usually had 1 on the right hand side and another spare wheel mounted on a bracket on the passenger running board in a very diiferent mounting system.

Another photo showing either the remains of a bracket or a much simplified design.

Default Thanks for the unusual pictures.....

For the restorers it means a lot of personal, mission related, modifications were done / allowed as deemed necessary.....

One burned out wreck shows a burned out rim INSIDE the cargo box...... and low and behold they even carried a spare radiator.... spare spring pack.......may be to recover a truck previously left behind.....

Bristling with guns and the required ammo, water and food, extra wheels/tires....... they must have been overloaded..............
