Cost of Things
Low prices by todays standards but still expensive in the 1940s when compared to the average wage.

Aust Weekly Wages in the 1940s
To put those costs in perspective, an Australian male 's average weekly wage in 1940 was about 4 pounds 16 shillings, with a skilled tradesman earning slightly more - a little over 5 pounds per week.
Female wages were much less, with an average of about 2 pounds 16 shillings per week. Both are relevant when considering the cost of military equipment, as many, many women were employed in all facets of munitions manufacture during the war. Mike |
