Shipping a CMP
What companies have you guys used for shipping CMPs around North America (Or Canada, preferably)? I need to get a pair of non-running CMPs 3000 km from Manitoba to the Yukon, but so far, no shipping company has been able to quote me for them.

Just got the quote back. $6500.
More than twice what I was expecting...looks like it's time to either beg/borrow/steal a 1-ton truck and a trailer, or find something in BC or Alberta. |

I went to Whitehorse and hauld my wrecker for my DT969 to Grimshaw AB with my Dodge Diesel and a heavy car trailer 2 1/2 days round trip . A 30 ft gooseneck trailer should haul the two cmps .A few years back I loaded a D7 cat in the boxcar in Yellowknife .They hauld it to the Artic Talk nice to Buffalo Bill maby he can haul them .I kept the road open to Norman Wells from FT Simpson .I told the producer of Ice Road Truckers I could give them a better story then the ICe Road boys . Now for good addvice If you can get a commercial trucker to haul them that's the way to go .They should fit in a van

I had a United Van Lines truck take a CMP box to Ottawa for around $400. The van had a couple of wrecked vehicles in it that were going from Vancouver to Ontario so the freight couldn't be very high. The driver said they haul lots of wrecks across country. On that box he had to go an extra 200 miles to pick it up too. Give them a try.

Anyways, yeah, it looks like I'm going to try and hunt down a truck. I have to fly down to Winnipeg to meet part of my paintball team for a roadtrip down to a game in Oklahoma in June, so, instead of flying back, I might try and rent or buy a truck and trailer locally, drive them back and sell them-I'd probably break even there, honestly, what with how Yukon used car prices are. |

The problem we have in the north is that the back haul is going south .Most trucks haul the contract load north and go empty south .Your biggest problem is to get the cmps to the truck going north and then loading it in a van . I would look at a tri axel fifth wheel trailer and a dually one ton . Take two in one trip .Also you could check with the convoy that is going to Alaska next year .They wil be taking extra trailers along incase someone has trouble They might like to haul an army truck to the north .I think they have a webb site . or check the MVPA club

So I may have better luck having someone haul them from Manitoba to northern Alberta (Fort Mac or something)?
If they're that close, I can even just make two trips with a borrowed half-ton and trailer-those I can get for free without any problems. |

If you got them to Lac Labiche Transports yard ,Gerald Wowk owns it .I sold him a 1954 KW ,he restored it and 6 others ,that would not be too bad .He might be able to help you get them too .You are welcome to stay over at my place .It would be part way .It's not out of your way .I have a few CMPs .If it work's out he he might get a 10 ton RCAF Mack truck from me in the spring and could bring your trucks to my place that's 250 miles shorter. I'm restoring the first KW to work in the oil patch north of Edmonton ,a 1955 KW.If you buy a truck don't buy newer than a 2003 .The new ones don't run .they spend half of there time in the garage. And with this new fuel comming we are going to have a heck of a time with plug fuel lines . Curly Grayham in White horse knows me very well .He has a big yard on the north side .He help me find my Holmes wrecker for my DT969 .Keep in toutch George

On that subject, do you know of anybody locally or locally-ish that would be good to talk to in locating one?
Also, what yard does he own? On another note, how much would it cost to have a CMP shipped from Britain? They're certainly a lot more common over there (And I'd love to have one that actually saw combat-my dream would be to find one that was used by the 1st Canadian Parachute Infantry, but I'd just be happy to find one that's a veteran of some variety), and often in better shape. |

Actually, I think I was just looking there on Friday-didn't go in, since they were closed, but I did a few passes after work.
Didn't see any MVs, but I DID see an old '50s Ford pickup-looked a bit beater, but the body was all there, great candidate for a Rat Rod... Also, the cost for shipping those trucks to Edmonton was less than half the price. What I'll probably end up doing is waiting until I have the money to pick up a used work truck, getting the trucks shipped to a storage yard, buying a truck and trailer in Edmonton, and hauling them back to Whitehorse myself when it thaws out a bit. |
