Above is the dash from my HUP which is a June 1945 construction date, can you spot the differences?

Always wondered did they just squeeze the switches closer together or did they make the hole in the dash bigger as well.

Cheers Phil

Hi Phil,

I cannot vouch for a Chevy light switch plate, but my five switch Ford plate measures 6-1/4" high by 3-1/4" wide.

Looking at the back, it looks like six switches could be squeezed into that same space.

Cheers,

Hello Phil,

Here is a picture of my 6 switch plate. It has the usual switches plus an extra one in the 5th position (from the top) for the “clear headlamp isolation”.

Is it the same as the one in your HUP?

I compared the 6 switch plate with a 5 switch plate (shown left). They are identical in size, the switches were more closely grouped together.

And the left one had six holes vs. the usual five. That’s why I merged it here.

Did these plates come off a Ford? Until now it seemed they were only fitted to late Chevrolets.

Default Auto pulse.?

Hanno, what is the auto pulse switch for do you know.? Is it a Europe feature.? Is it for an electric fuel pump.? I have never seen a switch plate here in Australia with that middle location being labeled, I have only seen them as blank.

Beau , it is for a small auto pulse electric fuel pump , it was additionally mounted behind the battery box inside the chassis , to overcome vaporlock problems .

Hi Beau,

"Autopulse" was a company that manufactured electric fuel pumps. Interesting that Ford and Chevy both refer to it by the trade name and not its functional name in various publications and even on a switch plate.

I can only vouch for what is written in a Ford Parts List, and not Chevy, but it specifically states that the "Autopulse- std equipment Indian Army"
I have never seen one here too. But who knows.

No doubt it was used in other theatres but a Parts List written in 1943 was still mid war so maybe India was not exclusive. With vapour lock a problem in hot climates it would make sense to fit it on Australian delivered vehicles.

My late war original wiring harness included the wiring for it but a blank switch plate where it should go.

Cheers,

Default Ford CMP- Autopulse switch wiring?

Hi Mariano,

Nice photo of the Autopulse electric fuel pump.
I thought I would have a look at my original ignition switch tails again to figure how the Autopulse was wired up.

There is a doubled up red and black wire from the ignition switch. One goes to the resistor but I was not sure where the other one went. Wiring diagram states:
"No. 45- ignition switch to lead from Autopulse pump"
"No. 46- Autopulse switch to Autopulse pump"

Could not understand why there would be two leads to the Autopulse the way it read.

I believe No. 45 may just be a jump to the input side of the Autopulse switch as per attached diagram. With that arrangement one cannot run the Autopulse without having the ignition switch on. This would be a good safety feature. One can still start the engine without having to run the Autopulse, a valuable feature when not needed. It sounds very simple and perhaps that is all it was.

Would be interested to hear what others may think.

Cheers,

I agree that it was meant to ensure that the pump was only intended to be operated with the IG on. The wiring could also have been a peculiarity of Positive Ground wiring, although that shouldn't be an issue unless the pump body grounds out.

Default Ford CMP- Autopulse wiring at chassis

Hi Tony,

I have attached a photo of a NOS wiring harness with No. 46 Autopulse wire included. All wires have been traced and marked and there is no No. 45 leading to the starter solenoid area. No wires appear to have been cut off or removed from the harness.

According to Parts List it is *C29QF 14403- Wiring Assembly- Horn (used with new design cab)
It terminates near the starter solenoid so a short tail would all that would be required to connect it to the Autopulse.

This is what has thrown me that the wiring diagram list of wires infers two wires to the Autopulse.

My apologies, Phil, for hijacking this thread but hope it is of interest. Perhaps Hanno can migrate it to the Snakes Alive thread.

Cheers
