Blowing the dust off
Should be on the road soon

Most excitement so far was finding a handful of blank rounds under the seat

Without looking it up, it would appear to have belonged to one of the light recce (armoured) units. If from Saskatchewan, most likely the SASKD. The base for the GPMG mount is the give-away.

Your M38A1CDN3 08776 was sold surplus out of CFB Moose Jaw in February 1987.

Default Thanks Ed

Thanks for the quick reply
I'm hoping for a quick refresh on this one
Get it back on the road with most of its scars and dents intact
Find some seats first

Your hunt for seat frames and cushions will be a tough one out here in the west. It is hard to find a jeep that is scrapped that did not have somebody try and "improve" the originals by cutting the frames and sticking in an old pair of buckets from a datsun or other scrapped car. As such, your either looking at repros out of the US, or finding something in the East where the Jeeps do eventually disintegrate. The repros are not cheap. There are repro bows out there, but they are generally too long to ship. You might be able to have them cut in half for shipping and weld them back together once in the barn.

If you come out to Shilo and pay me a visit, I can likely help you out on a lot of the small stuff like the wiper blades, a left fender in better shape, and a host of other smalls. It seems to me there is at least one seat frame left out at my favorite scrapyard another hour past me, but you will need a guide to find them.

It does show lots of potential, good luck with it.

Being a prairie flatlander, I would be afraid of either falling off one of those mountains, or else getting nosebleeds by being that un-naturally high from mother earth. Mountains kill many many people every year.

For the alternator not charging, make sure you have full battery power on the large 8 gauge wire, and the smaller wire should have power when the ignition switch is turned on. If the alternator is still not charging, you can remove an allen key plug towards the back of the alternator, and with a small electrical screwdriver, turn the rheostat to increase the voltage.

Re the engine not shutting off, the usual cause of that is that the field wire from the alternator is feeding power back to the distributor. That is another sign the alternator may be pooched.

Yes it is,so that doesn't explain why your vehicle keeps running after the switch is off, but does explain why the alternator won't charge. It looks like you may have had a small fire under that cover. The two small leads over to the inernal regulator are also burned up, and your field wire is missing altogether. It is possible that it was a short at that location, but it's also possible the alternator went to an overcharging condition and burned itself up. I would suggest someo disassembly is required.

There is no cheap source for thsoe alternators that I know of. Expect to pay between $300-600 for anything on line. I used to sell them for $125 back in the day when I bought 30 M151A2s, bot those are long gone.

Default Starter questions

Was wondering if the starter switch is repairable by buffing the contacts . I push the pedal now nothing happens
But I can jump the starter to get it spinning.

Yes, the starter switch can be removed, taken apart and cleaned up.

I have found that switch to be a source of battery drain. The contacts shed dust sized coper particles, that eventually form a trace from the power terminal to ground.

Looks good. I've heard they make a very nice fitting top. Did you get side curtains and doors too?

Default Canvas

I just ordered the top and seat covers.
Figured if it's raining or cold I'll drive something else
The top was better than I expected for sure.

As we discussed on the weekend, that is a common place for the Cdn2s to crack, but the Cdn3 has a re-enforcement plate on the inside of the frame at that location. She must have been driven hard. The light recce militia tended to push them through some pretty tough going, whereas in other units it was usually the transport for an officer, so would not be abused nearly so much.
