Looks pretty complete. Another CMP saved from the scrappers. Don't recall our SA border guards having seen it cross from SA... Cheers Tony

The cast brass plate on the dash says 1941 like most of them do here. The steering whel is mostly rotted away ...a common thing . The chassis is good on this one ........... phew As these are prone to rusting badly on these little trucks. Tony , it aint a CMP but the CMP prototypes were based on these pre-war 1930's pommy trucks ... e.g., wheel size and the wheelbase is 98" . With only around 21,000 CS8's made there are not that many left these days . And, considering that production stopped sometime around 1941 and they went through the early WW2 campaigns where many were lost in battle or abandoned to enemy forces.

Thanks for the update. I am new at this game having only been a MLU member for just over 12 months. I am grateful for any information that will keep my interest going. I am sure as I learn more about other military vehicles I will regularly put my foot in my mouth again. Cheers Tony

Great booty Mike!
So the M-C tally now stands at what number? Seems you have enough bits for a complete one? H.

PS as we were unloading the Morris , the ex Wermacht veteran from down the road drove past in his Tojo ute .. a strange thing . A coming together of history , in an odd way .

Have done a few checks... I inspected the gearbox just in time ..it was full of water ... water trickles down the gear stick . I've seen this problem before on open cab vehicles and I always check it out . I have washed it out with deisel fuel ... looks OK , shiny gears with no obvious damage . It turns over freely and gear shifting is easy .
The engine pulley turns a tad , the pistons are not stuck . The slack in the timing chain is taken up, then it jams, indicating stuck valves . These engines have the valve lifters in bolt on little blocks which are removeable . Somewhat like many vintage cars of the 1920's . The unusual rubber cushioned uni joints look a bit sick . Perished . Steering box was full of water as well . The drag link has sheared off, broken at the point where it threads into the ball joint end on the steering arm, at the wheel . Nasty .The drag link is hollow and it's rather thin at the threading , deep threads have left little meat there Could be dangerous for other CS8 owners .......maybe a safety bulletin should be spread around ...MIKE

Illustrate the potentially lethal problem
Hi Mike
Your photo "illustrate the potentially lethal problem" makes you stop and think. Good reason to carefully disassemble parts and inspect them. Cheers Phil

Hi Mike,
well done! That looks to be very complete example; you will have her running soon, right? You need to round out your early-war trucks with some other marques. Cheers, Dave |
