Winch worth keeping?
Greetings again wise ones.
This winch setup is on the back of my latest C15A project, as it was an NRMA tow vehicle. Should I hesitate in sending it for scrap?

I wouldn't scrap it, it looks like a good Garwood winch which will fit GMC, DUKW or Studebaker maybe Diamond T depending on what size it is. Looks like the tag is missing off the top
near the filler plug. I would offer it for sale and get some money to put back into the blitz. Good swap meet seller. Ken

Going by the cross member nearest the photographer the winch appears to me to be from a GMC 6x6. Does the other cross member incorporate a roller or mounting for a roller? If so that makes the winch almost certainly from a GMC.

Thankyou gentleman - looks like I will be taking it to Corowa for re-homing.

There is also the smaller "Tulsa" which i think is made by Garwood.

To buy or not to buy?
Winches are an item that are prone to abuse and it always pays to have a look at the critical parts which in particular refers to the worm wheel.
I was once offered a Braden winch from a Dodge Weapons Carrier at a good price that looked to be quite serviceable. Prior to going through with the deal I insisted on removing the side cover on the gear housing. The bronze worm wheel was laying in three pieces completely shattered. The fellow that was selling it I'm sure was unaware of the situation. A replacement gear at the time was $200 U.S. On another occasion I purchased a vehicle on which a Garwood winch had been installed upside down in a non original application. The damage done to the steel worm by condensation was on the level of destruction. David

Winch preserved
Thanks for all the input.
Have removed the winch and removed cover for inspection - all good and working, a few worn/chipped outer edges on teeth. Not a light item, what I ask for it at Corowa will probably cover extra fuel used getting it there ... Open to expressions of interest. Will NOT post.
