Canadian Dodge Breakdown?
I have a photo of a crate that is clearly a Canadian order: see the attached photo. The crate says "CHRYSLER" on the side in bold black BUT the crate is evidently containing a Diamond T Medium Breakdown, and evidently serial number 96980325. That is no Dodge number!
I wnder how Chrysler became involved? I know that the Canadian arm produced bodies but that would not be "the case" here. Odd. Last edited by David_Hayward (RIP); 11-05-07 at 23:27. |

Stencilling. The "CANMEC" means Canadian Mechanization HQ, (Telegraphic address) and "CANMILTRY" was Canadian Military HQ at 2,3 & 4 Cockspur Street in London SW1 in the Sun Life of Canada building. Knew it well inthe Seventies! Back of the High Commission.

The serial number starts 969, so that lines up with a DT wrecker. It maybe that Chrysler packed the vehicles, strange things happened in wartime between companies that in peace time, would be competitors.

'Chrysler' DT
Hi there
Chrysler was responsible for the outfitting of specialist workshop trucks, maybe Breakdown tractors fell under their area of responsibility? Steve

Diamond T 969
It makes sense that the Wrecker is a Diamond T 969 then (from the serial) as I have photos of assembled Canadian DT 969 Wreckers. Chrysler supplied the bodies, which used Gar Wood cranes?
Here is a Canadian Diamond T that looks as though it has a Machinery body, circa 1943. Which model would that be then? The Canadian 975A? Looks too short though...969? |

The "H" body was had a large lathe with a 16" chuck,a couple of drill presses ,work benches and even a small stove in it for inclement weather and char.. The tell tale stovepipe is usually located at the front flap of the tarp..
