Default relevance of letters prefixing service numbers

Gents:

1-Can anyone clarify, or direct me to site that would assist in doing same with reference to the letters that appear in front of Cdn. Army service numbers?

I have come across several different letters while researching Commonwealth Grave info.

2- If anyone can give me a credible figure with reference to strength of 1st Canadian Corps - Italy 1944 it might help me sort out conflicting info. I have received....

Thanks

Default Service numbers

The best reference for service numbers is Clive Law's book which shows the unit to which each block of service numbers was assigned. It is also mentioned on the page below.

The Canuck site at one point had info on which prefix corresponded to which province/region. Here's the related page, you may wish to do some digging around here to see if you can find the complete list. I can dig one out if you are unable to track them down here.

I think I must have been mis-remembering what was at Canuck, so here's a list of prefixes to regimental numbers and the corresponding Military Districts (c. 1939). This old Canuck page shows where the districts were located:

http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/orga.../districts.htm

Code:
A MD1
B MD2
C MD3
D MD4
E MD5
F MD6
G MD7
H MD10
K MD11
L MD12
M MD13
P prefixes were for Permanent Force members who went active, W for CWAC's. Some U and X nnumbers were assigned overseas.
