PETITION RE: desecration/disrespect for National War
Memorial

The recent Canada Day incident of “desecration” of
the National War Memorial, while shocking, is merely
the latest in a long series of incidents of disrespect
for the both Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier and what they represent.

This is perhaps as much a failure of our education
system and society to teach its citizens about the
tremendous sacrifice and contributions of Canadians
during two World Wars, Korea, and subsequent United
Nations missions around the world. Hand in hand with
this failure comes the failure to comprehend the
significance and even semi-“hallowed” nature of both
the cenotaph and the Tomb. While this in itself is a
subject very worthy of discussion, our immediate
petition concerns protection and to some extent to
demonstrate in a more obvious way, the tremendous
significance of such symbols and thus also the respect
they deserve.

Thus, for these reasons, we the undersigned, citizens
and eligible voters of Canada, request that a
permanent Guard of Honour be established around the
National War Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown soldier.
Members of the three services of the Regular Force
and Reserves would be tasked with this honourable duty
24/7, year-round (excluding severe weather conditions)

In addition we recommend that the raised portion of
the square encompassing the National War Memorial and
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier be declared out of bounds
to all food and drink, all bicycles, skateboards,
rollerblades etc. In addition, adequate signage
should be posted around this portion indicating its
significance and the respect that must be shown as a
place of reflection, commemoration, and contemplation.
Unlike certain other monuments, and in cases where
infractions occur, at least one of the guards on duty
would be permitted to inform the public of the rules,
and need for respect in this area.

Respectfully.

During Canada Day celebrations in our nation's capital city of Ottawa, three punks pissed on the Tomb of the Unknown.

Caught on film.

As of today, it looks like they have been arrested.

That's the reason for the petition.

Too bad that flogging is no longer a summary punishment!

I have forwarded my signature in support of this, received an acknowledgement, and I urge all to do so as well. It is a noble cause.

that sucks!!!! when i was at the aussie memorial at villies bretonoux i had to run about 12 campers off the grave site. they had pitched tents between the graves and were useing the wall of rememberance for a backstop for a socker goal. they were even getting ready to lite a bar-b-q on the grass. we had words and i had to go and find a police officer on a sunday. kinda hard in france. when we got back with the police they had all vanished but left the trash all over.

I'm sorry to say that the kind of behavour outlined above is present in all countries and it is not just limited to mindless uneducated thugs. Is there really that much difference between some yob,and a developer who destroys a historic military site or building? and for that matter the planners who allow such a site to be destroyed?

Another thing,it's not just the young who show disrespect for those who fought for our freedom, some time ago I was introduced to a "gentleman" in his 60's who had a large collection of personal property which he had taken from fatal WW2 aircraft crash sites,I asked him if he had ever reported what he had found or considered that the mens families might want it and he replied that it was his as he had found it. I reported him to the police but they could see nothing wrong with his actions and so would not pursue it. The property was eventually taken off him by the RAF.

It is down to all those who are sick of the disrespect shown to our fallen to DO SOMETHING!!! the petition Marc has started is a step in the right direction but it is up to everyone(and I'm not just talking Canada here) to make a noise if they see a war memorial falling into disrepair or being vandalised,a historic site or building under threat,a "relic hunter" who has something he shouldn't(eg dog tags) etc etc. If you see something you don't agree with contact your local newspaper and government,it's only by making ourselves heard NOW that we can perhaps ensure that in another 60 years those who fought for us are not totally forgotten.

Same here Geoff! We need to keep the pressure on the politicians to ensure they understand that they need to heed the vast majority of Canadians, not just the unemployed ones who can afford to attend every demonstration because they're on the dole. I am outraged by the actions of those three Droogs.

On the flip side, a good friend of mine, Commander Dennis Moody, USN oversees a ceremony held every two years to honour 18 Canadian and British exchange pilots who were killed in flying accidents while serving in Texas during WWII. They are buried in a military cemetary outside Carswell A.F.B. (now called the Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base) Commander Moody supplies WWII U.S. uniforms and '03 Springfields and commands the colur guard. I've been asked to join the colour guard will attend the next ceremony this Fall. It gladdens my heart to see our friends and neighbours honouring our dead.
Well done, Commander Moody!

Default Me too.

I sent in my name too. I didn't receive any acknowledgement though.

I'd really like to see these monuments and places protected ... fences do work and I do want to see plaques or something identifying the signifigance, people and events the monuments are about so the un-knowing can read and learn.

There will always be people who don't know, and worse will be those that don't care. Fences and security helps. Charges may help deter people too.

I hate to learn about stuff like this happening.

Karmen.

Default Pee-er goes to jail ...

Hello All,

Well, THIS guy went to jail for pee-ing on a monument! I just read this story in Canoe (via the Winnipeg Sun links) and thought you'd all be interested to read it too

Karmen.

SUDBURY, Ont. -- A 21-year-old Winnipeg man who relieved himself on a war monument in this northern Ontario city's downtown Memorial Park says he didn't realize what the structure was.

"I had no idea it was a monument. I was over the top that night," Shawn Morris told Ontario Court Justice Guy Mahaffy.

"I can't see how someone would mistake that monument from something other than what it is," Mahaffy said yesterday as he sent Morris to jail for 60 days.

The sentence is in addition to the month Morris has spent in jail since the July 26 incident.

The Navy League of Canada monument was erected to honour merchant seaman who lost their lives during the Second World War.

Hi Pat,

Yes, wouldn't it be wonderful if all people could simply know and feel true gratitude, and respect, for these things, like WAKE UP. The memorials and monuments aren't just pieces of stone. I wish more knew that.

PS: You never know, you could have some Canadian blood in your genes. Maybe we're even related ... ya never know, eh?!

Karmen.

lack of it there in.In my day there was the draft and

for all males.

Thank you for the sentiments Patrick. Respect for our war dead and vets far surpasses any borders artificially erected by Man. There are many who don't understand concepts such as Duty, Dedication, and Sacrifice. What they don't understand, they fear so they lash out and try to destroy it.
I, as I'm sure you do become enraged when I see those of other cultures burn the American flag or commit the most heinous act of all, drag the bodies of dead servicemen threough the streets. Truly shows how far down the evolutionary ladder they are! I truly wonder how the Jihadists will tremble when the Christians of the world unite. Just as Joshua brought down the walls of Jericho with trumpets, shouts of "CRUSADE!" will destroy the bastions of Islamic Fascism throughout the world!

Default Yes it does

Yes that type of thing enrages me, and it would do
that to almost anyone. We should have spanked them
very hard, at the time specter was in the area and
slick willy would not let them put guns on target
it would have changed some minds fast.
Im glad these people (I use that word losely) got
what was coming to them...
