Default Common Problem with air or hydralic cylinders

H Stuart

This is a common problem with both air or air/hydralic cylinder lifts. Creep as this is commonly called is a result of air or oil leaking from one side of the ram seal to the other. Seems to be more of a problem on newer, read as chinese made cylinders. You can test generally to see if it is actually the ram seal leaking by or oil/air leaking by the control valve. If it is the actual ram seal leaking gradually as the back side of the ram cylinder fills with oil it either will not extend as far or the oil will start leaking out around the ram.

Creep is why garage lifts etc. have mechanical lift locks. I have even seen creep in freight elevators though in that case it was less than an inch at full load in a 24 hour period.

As to fix it is more of a question of how fast does the lift arm lower under load. If it is a matter of minutes you have a real problem if it is over night that is something else.

I have a 1000 lbs lift arm on my C60L basically the same same assembly you show but with a swivel, and it will creep down over night it doesn't seem to be much faster fully loaded or just left up with no load. Not a problem unless it lowers the engine to the floor or drops the arm on the hood of car over night.

My plan is to fit a arm prop much like they use on dump trucks to prevent the arm from creeping down.

Interesting problem, looking forward to hearing what other people have to say.

Cheers Phil
