Amazing find! Looks like the only needed the drive train components and some flat steel plate, then buried the rest to get rid of it?

According to my Chilwell list, it's a No1 Mk II, built by Sentinel on contract M.1532 which covered 619 carriers T.252505 - T.253123.

British built carriers don't have the armour stamped in the same way as Canadian ones. If there's no ID plate still on the hull then all you have to go by is the T number. In reality, as Adrian has said, that's pretty much all the info you'll need/find. The contract card may tell you more but probably not.

Eric, its a Sentinel Wagon (UK) built MkII, 3 inch Mortar carrier, according to Nigel Watsons book.
Adrian, The British carriers weren't stamped in the front armour. The info was only on the gun metal plate riveted to the drivers front guard. The Canadians helped to preserve the info with theirs, by stamping into the armour (after the first 1000 or so) This will be a late war carrier. It is similar to Petrs carrier, although his is not a Mortar.

Thanks for clarifying Ben and Lynn, I've only ever had a T-16 and a Windsor and they both had it.

Sentinel
At Corowa this year we had a Sentinel 3" Mortar Carrier there, going by the census number it is an earlier one. I also know of another Sentinel 3" Mortar Carrier in NSW, yet to be restored.
Here is a photo of Wayne's Carrier at Corowa. regards, Richard

Many thanks to you all, what a great source of knowledge!
What is the most significant differences between a normal Carrier and a Mortar Carrier? Lynn Eades, Donīt really understand what "control rod cover" is. Please post a Picture where you have marked out what you want me to take better Pictures of. Pictures have to wait at least a week, the carrier is very far from where I live. There are a couple of extras added on the carrier when it was used in the forrest. I found a Picture of the carrier on a Facebook group last year and managed to get in contact with the photographer. From there I found the location and later the landowner who nearly did not know about it. Iīll try to use as many parts as possible on my drivable Carrier. /Erik |

Eric, where the driver sits, on his left side is a tin cover that runs between the two seats. This cover has some kind of fitting at the front. There should be a gear lever just there as well.
Carriers were kitted out to suit many different roles. The Mortar carrier had a clear flat deck at the rear on which was carried the 3" Mortar. There was no battery box in the middle, over the deck. The POL box which was usually fitted to the battery box was fitted at the left hand side on a mortar carrier.

After 40 years in the woods... Is this what you are looking for? Hard to see if itīs an original fitting or aftermarket.

Thankyou Eric. I still don't know what that bracket is.
I see the gear change now.

Great find Erik.
Some grafts and a bit of elbow grease should see a nice carrier hull out of that lot ! Top tip, don't dispose or sell anything from it until you are 100% sure it isn't needed It's the carrier restorers mantra to do follow this rule. Likewise if you need anything, just shout up.

Found the ID tag under the dirt There was at least 20cm of soil in the drivers compartment, did a quick digging and found a little hatch, original?

Good luck and say your thanks to the landowner. If he is open to the offer, a standard item of currency in Canada for helping a stranger is a bottle of reasonably good whiskey or for lesser assistance, a case of 24 beers.

The hatch cover is off a Studebaker Weasel. It is the Detonator cover. A nice piece of jewellery for a weasel owner. There are a number of weasel owners over your way that would be happy to own it.

maple_leaf_eh, the landowner was happy to get rid of it. He could not understand why I was interested in it
ozm29c, great! Talked to a friend who has a collection of Studebaker Weasels so I will give it to him. /Erik |
