Default Mike Calnan

For those who know Mike Calnan, here is an image from RV 89 in Wainwright, Alberta. I think Mike is trying to arrange a trade for the M163 20mm Vulcan.

Default M163 Vulcan

That was a neat shoot! The Yank Bird Gunners were attached "Under Command" and I was tasked to be the RSO. They did an amazing demo of bird gunnery and then showed the effects of a Vulcan on tanks. A twenty second burst hammered into an old Agony Wagon (Centurion) about 1000 metres down range and you could see the rounds hammering into the turret armour and ricocheting all over the place... after about 12-14 seconds the armour was white hot and just sort of melted inwards allowing the last hundred or so rounds into the turret to cause major disruption of the colloidal intelligences that would have been inside!

Damn near talked them out of the weapon system too... didn't have enough Scotch on hand!!!

Ed, any chance I can get a copy with the photo credit at the bottom?

Cheers! Mike

For a moment I thought this was going to be a photo caption competition, such a shame to waste a photo like that.

I am posting here with a heavy sense of trepidation.

I hope and pray this has a good outcome.

On Saturday (yesterday) while attending the Diefenbunker event we expected to see Mike and his kit but he didn't arrive.

Late in the day a fellow officer from 30th Field arrived and let us know that Mike had a medical event on Friday afternoon and is in hospital in the Ottawa area.

I know nothing more, I am not in contact with the family.

I just felt it important to post this as others will not know unless the word gets spread.

Thoughts and best wishes from this household to Mike.

Robin

Mike was admitted to Ottawa Civic yesterday and was put into Intensive Care following suspected kidney failure. Reports today say that he is well and can receive visitors 24/7 except 0730-0830 and 1930-2030 hrs. It has been suggested that a couple at a time would be better for him as regards for visits.
He was last reported in ICU Bed 14.

Default Gunner

Mike has his laptop computer with him at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, and he will peer into MLU when time and circumstances permit. I visited him this afternoon and am pleased to report that he is faring as well as can be expected. He is suffering a renal failure, but is being well tended by a very cute young lady nurse in a world class medical facility. More later as the situation develops.

I visited Mike tonight.

He can't log in to MLU, he says. He has a pda and has personal email and cell phone and is using both.

Chipper and alert but beaten up but has a positive mental attitude.

Told him I had posted on MLU and that we are thinking of him. I also warned him my ex is a nurse there . . . .

Default Gunner sitrep

I am pleased to announce that Mike Calnan (aka Gunner) was released from the hospital late last week. He is recovering at his parent's home near Kars, Ontario, where he is being supervised by his mother, who is a retired nurse. He is in good hands and while his leash has been shortened significantly, he is making short trips to the museum to prep a few vehicles for the upcoming Canada Day parade.

It was touch and go there for a while...

Mike is staying at his parents this week and I dropped by on Sunday to say hi. He is looking good but still tired. However, nothing seems to stop him as he was at today's Canada Day parade in Merrickville. This photo may have been the only time he was actually sitting.
