Here is a blast from the past........ ...... you missed your chance by roughly twenty years ago..... do you remember the afternoon that a certain unit at FYA went to dinner and left one sitting on the square....unsecured.... I won't mention the unit by name... but I know you know of whom I speak ....... Cheers

Well I got that beat Mark!! Do you remember at the end of one summer EX..the same unit only brought back 3 of the 4 106s?...one was forgotten in Pet..so yours truly and Purvis went up in the Crewcab ( along with an Officer we were supposed to leave there) to pick it up.. When we arrived we found that a 106 would not fit in the back of the CC...so I went out to the field Maintance unit..talked to one of my techs that I had left a 106 jeep with and went back to pick up the gun..I was told I could not drive on the roads off base with the gun on the jeep..so we kinda tied it down in the CC until we got off base then mounted it on the jeep....I remember going down one of those long hills on the 401..the needle went right off the speedo..so I had to pull it out of gear...I didn't dare use the brakes..I would guess we hit 90 at the bottom..The Officer with me was screaming for me to slow down...thank God I couldn't see his face with the gun barrel between us...I remember shortly after stopping at a resturant at the top of the next hill..I parked at the front windows in the driveway...you should have seen the faces of the people eating...I think that was the scariest driving experiance I had during my Military time...even worse that trying to teach Fraser or Miller to drive...I saw Miller at the Camp X Rememberance Day Service this year..He's a QM type these days... anyway I would like to help my friend build a 106 jeep..I think he has a windshield for one..and thats a start.

Dean, if you get in touch with Rob Love in Shilo, he might be able to point you in the right direction. If I am not mistaken, we went to a yard by the name of Westbourne"s Surplus and lo and behold, laying in the yard were all the accoutroments that were fitted to a 106 RR, less the RR of course. The jump seats, split windshield, mounts etc all there. At the John Adamiak auction in September there was one of these beasts. John's M38A1 was an original RR jeep that was converted to a M38A1. The tell tale signs were there still, such as the side mounted spare tire and all the holes in the rear area for the 106 mounts and hardware.
Not sure where it ended up but I know John considered putting it back to full glory at some point in time. Too little too late I suppose.

106 RR Jeeps
Hi Guys:
A guy in Petawawa named Kim did a nice job of an M38 version. For the gun he mocked up everything using ABS and turned wooden parts. Fooled experts until they touched it. He is currently serving in NATO AWACS and I think his jeep was stored or sold. Eric Booth might be able to give you more detail. If your going to add all that weight in the back don't forget the coiled booster springs and mounts. Cheers, Mike

Cdn. Government Disposals
Most timely gentlemen but frustrating also. Our much beloved (not) Canadian Government is currently searching for a buyer for 500+ M2HBs and 100+ 106mm RRs. Sadly they won't sell to the taxpayers, only to other governments. Robert in Toronto

Hi Hanno,
Thanks for that link. I know the place that owns the website. They do vehicle restorations and I've photographed some interesting stuff there at times. I didn't know they had a website. None of the above types are in service any more, they've all been replaced by variants of the Mercedes - ELVO 240GD. Fyll |

Well here is a pic of my recently aquired ser2 1958 gun buggy. ARN 110849 chassie No. 143900384 It's just gone into my workshop now for some much needed TLC. One interesting note about this one is that befor it was converted to a gun buggy it did time as a ambo.

hey there!
Well at the moment all I know that it's last unit it served with was 5/7 RAR as it still retains most of it's unit markings. As for the ambo all i can at the moment assume it was one of these type (see photo) A friend on mine has one of the kits to convert a SWB into 1. NB the photo came of Paul Handels web page. Phil...
