Hi,
Wondering if anyone knew if the Canadian Army mounted weapons to the M38 Jeeps or not. Haven't been able to find any info on it and particularly interested in the C5 machine gun. Any info or any pics would be appreciated. Thanks, Nathan |

Yes, both M1919A4 .30 cal and M2 .50 cal MGs along with the M40A1 106mm Recoilless Rifle were all mounted on the M39CDN. There have even been photographs posted on this forum. Try a more refined Google search of M38CDN with 106mm recoilless or use the search function on this forum.

The C5A1 version of GPMG was after the M38 left service. It would have been the M1919A4 as Ed mentioned, or else the C1 GPMG. Technically, there was no C5....they went to the C5A1 nomenclature so as not to confuse the modified C1 GPMG (which would have had the new model number C1A1) with the FN service rifle.
Officially, the mounts would have been the US pattern M31C stand and cradle. It was not until the 70s that the M38A1 CDN style Z arm came out for the later Jeeps. The M31 mounts languished in weapons shops and QMs until the mid 80s. I do not have a date when they were officially disposed of. |

the CF used both the M-31 and M-31C post mounts and mounted both the 1919 and M2 and these post mounts can be OE or repro for a price,

I think I've shared this before. It's an article from the Infantry Journal in 1978 about converting the .30 cal GPMG to 7.62 mm. It also relates the time frame during which all this took place and the nomenclature changes.
From 1919 to C1 to C5A1. Cheers, Dan. C5A1.pdf |

Hi Nathan,
If you check out the first few photos in this thread you'll see the mount I used on my M38CDN. I used the M31C and had to fabricate the plate that goes on the cross member under the tub. Since refurbishment I haven't put it back together as I'd have to re-jig the underbody mount due to changes in alignment and height to tub because of the new body mounts, etc. http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=31723

Thanks everyone for the info, pics and the article. Guess I'll be looking for a pedestal mount!
