Just watch, someone is going to take that carrier for a good run, the Iltis boot will fail,causing the control rod to corrode and fail,which will cause the driver to lose control and die in a fiery wreck! Better to wrap some tape around it.

Just a little update on my carrier and some requests for help. The pictures attached show the carrier last summer repainted and in its new markings. As well as the paint pretty much all I have had to do is a full re wire and replace the rubber items though removing the radiator for repair was a pain. Currently the tracks are off to repaint the suspension so it will be ready for the new show season.
I am in need of a workshop manual UC-F2, does anyone know where I can get a copy, preferably a hard copy though electronic would be acceptable? Finally I have a problem with the hand brake. Every time I put the foot brake pedal down the hand brake goes on one notch of the ratchet, it may be that once I have a workshop manual it will become apparent how to adjust this correctly but I seem to recall a thread on this very problem some time ago which I cannot now find, can anyone point me in the right direction for that please? cheers Mike

Mike, your carrier looks swell, even more so with the new paint.
Creeping hand brake ... Best wishes finding a manual such as UC-F2. Bruce H. can chime in any time. UC-F1 under section G-4 may assist you with the creeping hand brake. Once again, operative words such as imperative, must, and necessary appear ... Measurement at rear of 2.90, on front outside bell cranks in correct hole of 2.14, use of accurate gauge blocks, tracks off, cold drums, shoes hard on, and all adjustments with lock nuts functional. Biggest issue with park brake creep is down to pre load in the system, or lack of. As Michael has posted, those tools are a must (in my opinion) my last carrier turned and stopped perfectly, and I didn't suffer the creep...... again as per Michael, I always got best results breaking the tracks and fine tuning the system.

Rob doesn't stop at Iltis parts,
For 37 Pattern Webbing collectors he cuts up webbing for projects too! I have been in his sewing room and I had to leave. Too upsetting to see a large pack murdered for it's buckles or large section of web material cut out of it!

Hi Mike,
Nice to meet you at war and peace, You can chase your tail with that handbrake creep issue. I would not worry about it creeping on 1 or 2 notches. The issue I had with the handbrake is driving the carrier forgetting the handbrake is still applied. I put a yellow scaffold end cap over the handbrake top once applied, so when you jump in later you know its on. Kevin.

Kevin, if you put some pre load into the system it cures it.... no chasing of tails required buddy. I had zero creep with my carrier, also set Bens scout up with him, and I believe he has no creep issues either ? Took me an hour including tracks off time. grab me the next time you see me and we will sort it for you.

I really do need to get this sorted as it already has caused a problem with the handbrake coming on sufficiently to cause me to skid to the right when driving, not something I want to do again. I really need to find a workshop manual that gives me the full instructions on how to set the preload hence my appeal for anyone who can help me find one? Cheers Mike

It does not give you a figure, but from memory describes it as "considerable" !
I setup the gunners side of the hull first, then the drivers side.. I set my pre load via the short brake rods that go to the foot pedal, they are to be equal in length... fit the drivers side link rod first then using a pry bar fit the gunners side link rod, this will tension the whole system... the parking brake must be off, and the brake shoes must be wound onto the hubs to isolate the system. Then when all is done dial the shoes in slowly so they are just clear of the hubs. Jump back in and press the foot brake hard, check for creep, same time have someone check the hubs lock and release when the pedal is applied and released, likewise the park brake locks the hubs when applied. The pressing of the foot brake also equalises the system for any further tweaking. Finally adjust your wheel so that the brakes are starting to be applied when the horizontal spoke on the wheel is at 90 deg from its neutral position. And your done ! Set up using the spacer tools !!!!! And make sure your bell cranks on the drums are in correct positions before you begin. Think i have explained that as best I can, if need be speak with Shaun and we can all meet up with you and help you out. I have the tools for setting up still ! Alternate PM me and I will give you my number and I can talk you through it at a slower pace.... Finally what paint code green did you use ?

The method Richard describes works well and is the correct method as described in the period manuals. I guarantee you'll have no creeping handbrake, no need for tail chasing if you do it properly.
It'll take two of you a couple of hours (including tea drinking) the first time. Please be careful until you're done it. Skidding to the right on a UK road could be very nasty. Ben |

settin the brakes up is not a black art , Richies is quite correct and has proven he has a good working knowledge of the system .
I'm sure you will be able to set yours up fine Mike if you follow the advice.its nice to see you need it to be correct and not just put up with it. I must say I am fearful that one day there will be a nasty accident with a carrier and we will all be band from the road due to poorly adjusted and maintained brakes etc. To run such a vehicle on the road or an area where the public have acces (IE a show ground) is putting everybody use of these vehicles at risk. Ignorance is not a excuse when there is such a wealth of knowledge on MLU. Let's stay safe guys .

This is the handbrake control bar, part number CTL 4050.
Handbrake should be four notches up the rack to put the handbrake "ON". "Hand brake control bar should be free on hand brake lever so that the lever will not be caused to creep "on" by use of foot brake." Last edited by Michael R.; 26-01-17 at 21:05. |

Thank you all so much for all the replies, the Carrier community is indeed a wonderful thing. I couldn't agree more with what Shaun that we need to keep our vehicles in the best possible operating condition, they are big and they can bite! I may need to clarify some points after reading the manual but have now got the idea of how to do this. Richard, kind of you to offer your help but Surrey is a long way from Newcastle for a cup of tea, I'll PM you with the paint details after the weekend when I can get at it.
