Default Calling all "Canadian" M38A1 Owners and Spotters

I am interested in putting together a database of surviving Canadian M38A1s, kind of like Clive has started on Ramtank.ca, but focussed more on "where are they now." I want to do this primarily because I am curious about how many are still out there, and as a resource for the M38A1 community. I will of course be happy to share any information gathered with Clive for his website, and as well I might post it to my own.

So, if you own an M38A1 CDN, CDN2 or CDN3, pretty please send the following information to me at M38A1@hotmail.ca:

- In the subject line, your CFR(s) or vehicle S/N(s)
- Your name (If you don't want your name used, I will put "Private Owner")
- City and Province/State
- Your e-mail address (again, if you don't want to be contacted by others let me know)
- Is it in running condition or not?
- Please also send a picture of it, if possible (this is why I'm doing it via e-mail rather than this thread - bandwidth costs $)

Similarly, if you have parted out a CDN, CDN2 or CDN3, please let me know the CFR or S/N, if you have them. This will allow me to record their fate.

And finally, if you see one in a museum or guarding a gate somewhere, please let me know about that as well (and provide the CFR or S/N, if possible). And as always, pictures will be welcomed.

For those currently/formerly in the CF who are used to copying the template, the following would be the e-mail I would send:

Sorry Michael - my original post wasn't clear enough. I am only looking for info on the Canadian contract M38A1s. Trying to compile a list of the ex-US Army and USMC models would take the rest of my life!

Default Update

Through my own investigations, and from what people have sent me thus far, I have extablished the continued survival of 13 CDNs (10 in Canada, 1 in the US, 1 in the UK and 1 in Australia), 16 CDN2s (15 in Canada and 1 in the US), and 12 CDN3s (All in Canada). Interestingly, of the 36 (so far) in Canada, 18 are in Ontario, 6 in BC, 4 in AB, 1 in SK, 1 in MB and 6 are unknown (meaning I've found a picture of it online, but not who the owner is or where).

So please keep the info coming, and help me fill in the gaps.

Mike

Default Serial numbers

Two other important details to gather when collecting M38 or M38A1 info: date of delivery (from the data plate) and whether it is w/wn (with winch) or wo/wn (without winch).

Hi Mike you should have got my email with the info you requested...but here's a little more if you wish to add it to the 67 "Date Acquired 01-Jan-67"
"Date dispossed 23-July-85" Also there is no data plate was removed but has the longer frame and the PTO Transmission for the winch...Not sure if it was stock with the order but the frame does not seem to be a weld job.

Jon,

I lived in Owen Sound from 1980-1993, and visited fairly frequently until my parents finally left the city about 5 years ago. Too bad we never crossed paths!

cheers,

Mike

So we're now up to 16 CDNs, 16 CDN2s and 15 CDN3s, for a total of 47 trucks so far. I've also nailed down the current owners and locations of some I was unsure of.

Well, how 'bout that! Yesterday was the 8th anniversary of our arrival here on the Derry Line. Did you ever see the guy in town with the CDN3 in UN colours?

Honestly, the only green (or white)-painted vehicles I ever saw belonged to the Grey & Simcoe Foresters. In fact, the Sherman sitting in front of the Armoury is what got me interested in this hobby in the first place. In fact, there used to be a Sherman in a park in Meaford, as well, which was accessable through its underside. Don't know what ever happened to it - it probably disappeared around 25 years ago.

Do you know the guy with the CDN3? Is he on this forum?

cheers,

Mike

Not really in a publishable format yet, but hopefully in the next couple of weeks....

If you're looking for parts try posting something in the "For Sale" section!

Sherman in Meaford is in front of the Legion.

Only saw UN Jeep at a couple of cruise nights...don't know the guy and haven't seen the veh for about 4 years.

Sherman in front of Armouries is done up in bogus tac signs.

OK, I'll stop hijacking your thread!

Jon, if the UN marked Jeep is the one I think it is one of my customers in Oshawa bought it in Owen Sound. It was a nice Jeep and needed only a little work. He has since moved up to your neighbourhood so the Jeep is back.
Cheers,
Barry

Default 1953 m38a1

I recently purchased a 1953 M38A1 CDN from a gentleman in Espanola, Ontario, Canada. I am currently in the process of rebuilding it. Jeep was running about 4 years ago. I am currently rebuilding the engine and hope to have it running by the end of winter. The jeep is CFR number 53-32678, serial no F-200579, built by Ford Canada on 17 Feb 1953. I noticed that on the engine block, there is a rebuild plate from RCEME workshop 27 (Possibly Warminster, UK), which indicates that the jeep may have spent some time overseas, perhaps as part of the Canadian 4th Battalion or the Allied Command Europe Mobile Force. Interestingly, while browsing this forum, I noticed that the jeep with serial number immediately preceding mine is still in the UK.

Attached are a couple of pictures of the Jeep and engine rebuild plate. My plans are to get the jeep mechanically sound and do a light sanding of loose paint, and giving it an oil rub. Another interesting item is that the front left tire is stamped 1952 and still holding air.

Your jeep looks good Pat. Usually the 53's have had lots of people hacking and modifying things over the years. Your looks like it has been kept in original condition. That will be a good one to see back in action. Please post more photos. I look forward to seeing your progress updates.
