Default Valentine Duplex Drive

At dawn on 4 April, 1943, B and C Squadrons of 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards embarked on Operation Smash 1, a training operation for D-Day.

The objective was to simulate an attack on Studland Beach using Valentine Duplex Drive (DD) tanks.

Because of bad weather, seven Valentine tanks were lost, drowning six of their crew.

The Valentine DDs are still located in Poole Bay, off Studland Beach (GB).
