Hypoid Gear oil without the Modern extreme pressure additives which effect brass. Withams is down the road from me, I use there products.

I would be very concerned about any oil with 'EP' in its name due to concerns about it attacking brass / bronze. You certainly don't need any form of high performance oil in that gearbox so use an ordinary gear oil of the same viscosity specified in the manual. It may be that the Withams oil in Alastair's post above specificaly states that it is suitable for use with yellow metals but if not I would not risk it. I have seen selector forks that have been exposed to EP oil for quite a short time and the wearing surface had been destroyed far more than running with no oil would have done.

Thank you Lynn,
The gearbox that I was refering to was a Bedford one and that had a bronze bush between the input and output shafts and that had almost disapeared despite having been fine about 200 miles before.

I think it’s an SAE 90 oil you need (safe for bronze bushes) rather than an EP 90.

What we call Straight 90, Morris Lubricants product is AG90

The Withams type I screenshot is safe on brass or bronze, if it’s from the ‘classic’ range. You can buy a modern EP90 from them too, it’s a separate product.

‘Manufactured as an SAE 90 monograde gear oil to exceed the API GL4 requirements of an extreme pressure oil. Safe for use where yellow metals are present, this classic gear oil balances excellent boundary lubrication with a balanced additive pack to both protect and preserve.‘

Gear change is always going to be poor compared to anything built since the 1960s. Syncro gearboxes were a revelation.

Alastair the gear change should be quite good.
The same box in a wheeled vehicle drives nicely, once you know how to drive it. The carrier is a little harder due to its higher rolling resistance.

Richard, If it was as you say, then I suspect some damage has occurred already, possibly at the intermediate bearing, or the input shaft bearing?
Keep an eye on it.

Lynn, I would hardly say 'nice' in the way that a modern syncro gearbox is nice, but they are functional and should work fine if as you say, you follow the operating instructions for selecting gears in a non-syncro gearbox.
