Default 4993 update

Its been a while since I've update the progress on my carrier. After finally maneuvering it into the shed, my daughter and I spent some time at the weekend removing many years of crude from the base of the hull.

Default Blitz shot

Love the pic of the former ambulance in action. Not a lot of clearance for the crane! Nice work.

Great pics, always good to see an old Blitz in action.
Looked to be a great day weather wise for some outdoor work up there.

Default Tidy beginnings

Hi Euan, that's a nice old-school starting project. Hope it brings plenty of enjoyment.

What we find in the last 20 years is, well - pretty bad.
Having said that no-one has the right to complain because if what we find hadn't been modified or cut around, it wouldn't still exist to be rebuilt.

G'day Euan,
Glad to see your about to get going on 4993. I was going to say about time but I haven't progressed to much on its mate from the same place.

I'll be watching with interest.

Regards Rick.

Hey Rick,
I have been slowly gathering bits & pieces so when the time comes I should have all the bits I need. the main missing part at present is an engine cover, I have the louvered top plate but no frame or sides.

That carrier looks an absolute gem!! Sandblast her and throw a lick of paint at it and she'll be sorted! An engine cover shouldn't be too hard to fabricate if someone supplied the dimensions (colin jones, you have made one of these before no doubt?)

Good Luck

Not answering your question, Ian. But, Welcome to MLU.

Maybe you can tell us all a bit about yourself in another thread.

Regards Rick.

Euan,

99 on red background = (from early 1943 till the scheme was revised in August 1944), the 2nd (in seniority) Infantry Battalion in an Infantry Brigade of an Infantry Division. Which actual unit it was assigned to would depend on the Formation Sign (which no doubt appeared on another storage bin!)

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info, just what I was looking for. So under the 99 is 69, would the same apply to this?

Hi Euan,

Don't quite understand: can you send me a higher res image directly via email, so I can see it more clearly? Is the '69' is behind the '99', ie the '99' overpaints the '69'? ( I can't actually see that on the image).

I'll then reply to you direct. From memory, both 69 and 99 are infantry unit signs of the 43-44 period, but I'll have to check.

Mike C

Hi Euan,

69 on a brown background would be the third Bn in the 3rd Brigade of an Infantry Division. I have no record of that number on a red background. Some examples would be 9 Division, 2/33 Bn or 2/48 Bn. Also used briefly by 4th Motor Regt when part of 3rd Motor Brigade Group.

99 on a red background: some examples are: 13/33rd Aust Inf Bn (AIF) and 41st Aust Inf Bn (AIF).

Is your carrier a SAR manufactured carrier? The nearest confirmed hull number I have to that is 4962, so it would be useful to know where 4993 was made.

Mike

Hi Mike,
Yes 4993 is SAR, the 99 bin is from another carrier as mine was missing.
The closest to mine would be Dave Argils 4995 as see on you tube when it was for sale on Ebay.

Default slow progress.

Time for an update.
Engine cover finished, bins all finished, dash done, tools done, shifter and gearbox done, fuel tanks done, now I need to blast hull and paint.

Default Horns and road wheels

I see you're going to have two tone horns, nice!

Also your road wheels look kind of racy...

Spare horn now on another carrier.

Not sure about the diameter of the road wheels or if the alloy will handle the load.

Default wiring

I’m in the process of wiring the dash for the LP2A and wanted to use the original style cotton covered wiring.
From all the information I have it seems all the wiring was the same colour, (base yellow) with a metal clamp sleeve to identify what colour it is and where it goes.
Does anyone have information different to this?

There may be someone here on the forum who can assist you with the restoration of your dash.

I've noticed some listings on Ebay for reproduction vintage wires with the various coloring and markings. Means it's available somewhere.

This listing is for some wire, check his other listings for different wire and other little bits that come in handy!. No connection etc.

Default Wiring

In the UK, I use Electrical Engineering Services 01204 884383 email (no web site). He does a range of cotton covered colours and sizes. I use mostly just black for my motorcycle restorations with his little coloured ID tags.
We also have Aoutosparks for classic wiring looms in any shape or colour www.autosparks.co.uk/
I'm sure both these firms will ship overseas.

Found a supplier of cotton covered pvc wiring from Vintage wiring in Ringwood Victoria. Very helpful in matching original colours.

Default hull number

Spent some time tracing the hull number so it can be reapplied in the same location after painting. Does anyone have a 3 ½ “ stencil?
Out of intrest the numbers on the left side are 3" high and 3 ½ “ on the right side.
