Another C8 in Australia
Just took these pictures yesterday at Jim Bennie's farm. This C8 has unfortunately had the chassis gas-axed under the cab presumably to make a trailer, but the cab is in restorable condition and the number is certainly unusual in this country. Can anyone shed light on this number? Unfortunatley there were no data plates present and time didn't permit scraping the chassis for a number.

Quote:
This was a British WD number for a Chev C8 4x2 8cwt Personnel, Contract no. SM 2029 Z4542694 to Z4544302. Last time I saw Jim he was looking around my workshop in June, say hello to him and Jennie. Richard |

Thanks, Richard
Jim and Jennie mentioned they'd spent time with you.
Jennie is planning to go online from home by the end of the year, so perhaps we'll be able to welcome them here on the forum one day. I think Jim would get a lot out of it once he learns the ropes of operating a confuser!

C8
I was told that this C8 originally came from a property along the Murray . It was spotted in the 1950's by a older VMVC member . The back half ( with original body ) was sitting in a old saw mill at Picola for years , I was chasing it in the early I980's , but unfortunately just missed out as they had a clean up and everything in the mill was scrapped . The body would have been a Duple built example .

I have an Imperial War Museum official shot of one of these trucks, # 12 Cab when new. I understand that some if not most were shipped out to the Mid-East and that would explain why it ended up in Aussie. Just to remind, shipped to say Alexandria, issued to AIF then 'sold' in 1941 say, and then shipped onward to Australia in due course with the other #11 and 12 cabs.
These are my known '1941 Model' C8s..note that there is another in Australia to the same Contract: 1842007132 8420x2 # 12 CAB 1842008354 ENGINE # ZR3,692,055 Z 4544183 S.M. 2029 1842008410 1842008487 1842008526 1842008570 8420x2 1842018573 ENGINE # ZR3,715,534 Z 4548484 S.M. 2029 [1]84[201]2042 Z 4544971 S.M. 2029 1842012403 1842012558 8420x2 1842014886 IN AUSTRALIA ENGINE # ZR3,703,271 S.M. 2029 1842016302 1842016388 1842017266 1842017323 1842017431 1842017463 1842017497 1842018573 ENGINE # ZR3,716,534 1842018649 1842018744 |
