Default Looking for markings for Canadian M3A1 Scout Car

I have the new Tamiya kit and have been looking for photo's of a Canadian White Scout car.
The Westminster Rgt at the Melfa river battle would be my preferred choice. but at this point I will take anything.
Hopefully pic would include census numbers.
Thanks
Gord

Reg Hodgson in St Albert restored an M3 Scout car in the markings of the Westminster rifles, as that was his Uncles unit.

I don't know if the Reg number is from the Westminster rifles, or is correct for the vehicle serial number but the markings are accurate.

I will ask him the next time I speak with him.

Please see two photos from recent events that Reg had his Scout car out for.

Thanks Rob,
much appreciated. I assume that the Westminster Rifles is basically the same regiment as the Westminsters?
It was also my understanding that the Canadian, and in fact, most Commonwealth Whites did not have the unditching roller mounted.

Cheers

Yes, Westminster Regiment is correct for WWII.

I call them the Westminster Rifles as My Grandfather was in the Rifles prior to WWI.

I have never heard of removing the unditching roller, when I restored the SAR Halftrack, it was a huge effort to remove the roller.

I wonder why they would do that?

Thanks Rob,
It's a good question on the roller. There are few, very unclear, photos of Canadian Whites and none of them have it installed.
I thought as much on The Westies.
I have seen photos on here of the SAR Halftrack restoration you did, really very impressive. that's another model I plan to get into. Is it OK to bug you for details when I get started on the Halftrack?
But first things first, The new Tamiya kit looks like a real winner and I am itching to get started. With what you have sent me already I have enough to get started at any rate.
Cheers

Default Another Scout Car in Cornwall, ON

Maybe ten years ago I was surprised to see an M3 on the floor of the Stormont Dundas and Glengarry (ie Sand Dirt and Gravel) Highlanders in Cornwall ON.

No idea if the markings are accurate, but their regimental museum is likely to have original photos or artwork.

Default Glens Association

Hi Terry,
I tried writing to the Glens Museum to get some details on the vehicle you posted on here, but the address given is no longer working. Do you have a current email for them?
Thanks

Default Westminster Regiment (Motor)

those are the Correct markings for the Westminster Regiment (Motor) during ww2.
The Regiment was part of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division during the war.
Hofmeisters mighty Maroon Machine. as a Mechanized infantry regiment.

Check out Canadian soldiers.com for vehicle marking info.

Yes I know the markings are correct as has already been stated.
I am looking for confirmation of the census number and the overall configuration and colour scheme.

If the volunteers with the museum have email addresses, they are likely their personal ones. If you go through the regiment or the mailing address, you can be sure to make contact with someone.

BTW, the weather is always worst end of Jan and early Feb, so there may have been a conscious decision to minimize coverage or attendance at the museum.

For what it’s worth, the SDG Scout car appears to have one too many numbers in its Census Number. There are typically seven digits after the ‘Z’. This vehicle has eight.

The last photo posted showing the back of a Dragoons vehicle is interesting. Note rear bumper is missing, as well as what appears to be hinges along the whole width. A tactical marking of X3 would indicate it's from the LAD unit as found in their War Diary, though the chart has X5 as the White Scout Car:

Don't have any photos to add to the discussion, but did find a couple WD numbers for a pair of M3A1's in the 2nd Cdn Corps HQ. These are:

CZ4258151 Lt General G G Simonds
CZ4258127 Brig A B Mathews

Default M3A1 Scout Car

That particular M3 is from the 40 LAD, have a look at the background colour gradations behind the 44 - they are RCEME.

Ed.

Can you ID the marking on the other rear corner, between the girl and the gentleman on the left? Looks like it might be a maple leaf over a diamond over three coloured bars, but I have my drinking glasses on at the moment.

David,

It's the vehicle tactical marking for II Canadian Corps. The 18th Manitoba Dragoons was the Corps armoured car regiment.

Cheers,
Dan.

I am always amazed at the details hiding in plain sight in the Archives. My trouble has been to find the right indexing and search guides.

OFF TOPIC completely, but tangential. What is the link to the 27th Canadian Armoured Regiment (Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment)?
