Default Australian CMP Tipper Question

I have seen two types of tipper in Australian service. This is about the all steel tipper body as fitted to the 60S models.

One has dual rear wheels with commercial type rims the other has the single combat type rim with 18in tyres fitted.

Now are these the same with the only difference being the wheel setup or is it a difference between Ford & Chev models? or is it a different reason altogeather?

Pictured is the type rear body I mean courtesy of the AWM Data Banks. This also shows the single rear wheels.

cheers
Cliff

Default Tippers

Hi Cliff

Only the No.1 ( I think it is) with the wooden body should have the split rims (10.50X20) not 18"

The "Trucks, 3-ton, Tipping, 2 1/2 cub. yds. (Aust) No.3" has 7.25X20 with duals on the rear.

So by the look of the tray on the upper one I think this is a No.3 as well.

Here's a Chev version of the No.3 with the wrong wheels

And another, also with 20" wheels:

Cliff and Keith

When the dual wheels are fitted, a special spacer is used on the front wheels to bring the centre of the dished wheel over the swivel bearings ( king pins ) . With out this spacer the front hub is likely to be damaged , when I was in the country we had a Ford Blitz fire truck on duals and it broke 2 hubs over a period of time . I only become aware of the spacer in recent years .
Have attached a pic of one from the Truck Hall of Fame in Alice Springs , it has the spacer fitted but has the single combat rim.

Keith and Jim. Thanks for your replies I appreciate it. I took measurements of this type of tipper body when I was at Kingaroy and it was a dual wheel truck but other photos I have from both AWM and Pictures Australia show the single wheel version, hense my confusion.

Jim it is the first time I have seen the spacers so thanks for your imput.

I am building a 1/35 scale model of the tipper so this is why I asked but I will make it the same as the dual wheel picture, as the model I am modifying is a Chev as well and I have some spare GMC-CCKW wheels. I will leave the tray up and leave the RH front guard off as well I think. After all these hard worked trucks did a lot of work in the Pacific building airfields and roads as well as dock facilities.

Cheers
Cliff

PS> also thanks to Bob Moseley for supplying (some time ago) photos of the hydrolic hoist setout on the CMP tipper.
