Lonely Universal
HI
Saw this poking around the inter-web for other things. All alone on Sable Island. https://warsearcher.com/2016/02/01/t...-sable-island/ Another pic here: http://www.sableislandhorses.ca/sabl...ugust-10-2009/ regards Darrell |

Sable Island
I bet you it is still on the Island. I used to know the owner of a charter operation who used his Islanders ( twin engine short field aircraft ) to ferry scientists and supplies to and from Sable. They landed on the beach at low tide because there was no airfield. This was in the late 80's early 90's ... I think they use helo's now. Anyway i got to fly the Islander and many of his other interesting airplanes like the Cessna 337, ex military spotting planes used in Vietnam . Not much is taken out of Sable because of cost so they must have an interesting dump. There was a station there during the last war . Weather and submarine spotting , so that might explain the presence of the Carrier. Very interesting picture indeed . Remote and lonely place .
Is that the bracket for the smoke discharger on the right hand side of the Carrier ? In the back , is that a storage bin also consistent with a Mk I ? No side steps but sand guards intact .

The carrier is still on the island, you can see it in google earth, it's deteriorated since this photo, located near West Point.
Kevin.

"Think we will need a bigger boat . . . " as the saying goes.
Wouldn't mind a spare engine and set of tracks!!

That photo of it sitting on the beach has always intrigued me. I had it as my screen saver for awhile! Must be hard to recover if it's still there!

My guess is that the track has broken under the tension of rust. It is probably in a worse state than it looks.

Derk, it's not sitting on the beach, it's next to an inland fresh water lagoon.

Hi Kevin
Fair one but two totally different things. Seaside air to the max yet the Cornish survive!! Their automobiles suffer a bit more though. Is this carrier restore-able? Depends on your commitment, I suppose. regards Darrell Last edited by Darrell Zinck; 05-04-17 at 02:18. |

If you save and blow up the photos, you will see that pretty much all of the inner metal over the tracks has either disintegrated or is laying on the track. You can also see where the armour has blistered in the corners, indicating that it is likely very thin.
On the plus side, two of the bren stem mounts are there, and they are primarily brass. I think I see a third one sitting inside the hull. |

This old soldier will fade away and dissolve from sight. eventually . But knowing how difficult it is to access the island ] ( no wharf ) how the hell did it get there ?
