Ford trailers- in australia.
HI all, knowing theres a fare few aussies on here, i thought id ask this question, not exactly cmp related, but it could be depending on how you look at it: (they might have towed them!)
Going throught the australian vehicle rego boks in the awm over easter, i found a fare few entries that surprised me, both with things that i didnt think came to australia till post war but came during the war and things that i didn think came full stop whicche also came during the war, anyway, there were a lot of entries in one book for "1/4 ton cargo trailers" produced by ford- i didnt ford made 1/4 ton/8cwt trailers? i know they made various aa and searchlight trailers and other sorts of trailers, but not the 1/4 ton jeep trailers does anyone know about these or have a picture- better still, actually have one? Thanks for anything, Ian.

Attached goes a pic of an Australian 1/4-ton trailer. I don't know who made these - could it be they were manufactured/assembled by Ford in Geelong? Cheers, Hanno |

Possibly, but i dont know.
Hello hanno,
Thanks for the reply. With out having actually seen one of the ford 1/4 ton trailers i dont know what they look like. From what i can find so far, there were several main manufacturers of jeep trailers for australia, both form here and abroad. The manufacturers that i picked up were: Willys Bantam Peter Brothers, GMH, International, Ford, Morris, Hopes, individual local patterns and also others which i might have skipped over I have seen examples of the willys MBT, Bantam T3 and the GMH, but not of the others, as these were in the greatest numbers in the books. Things i dont know 100% are if trailers were made and rebadged, but i don think so as the books were maintained with info from the various vehicle depots and so info was read straight off data plates, counting out that any other manufacturers trailers could have been skipped over as a GMH for example. The one i think in the picture is a GMH trailer, probably 3 or 3a model, but unsure. Hopefully somone would be able to give me some help with the other trailers, but i think ill have to do a fare bit of digging around. Thanks again hanno, Ian.

Aussie 1/4 ton trailers
Ian, these trailers are quite common in Aust. They are detailed in the back pages of that Aust Military forces Jeep manual you have for sale! They are described as "Trailers, 1/4 ton, (Aust) No2" also No3, No3a and No 4. I've got one and there were about 6 to trip over at Corowa. They are actually more common than Bantam built Jeep trailers here. I'll post some photo soon.

Hi tony, i realised that they were more common than the wilys/bantam, but have you seen any other manufacturers than the GMH? thats what im interested in- going on the same lines as the americans- they mainly used willys/bantam but there were a whole lot of other manufacturers of which little is known about. I figured this type of info would be useful for us here in australia thats why i decided to dig around!
- and yes, thats where i got the guess about the picture hanno posted, from the back of the drivers manual! a picture of your trailer would be great too- either posted here or if you could email it to me. - i might be able to start a "register" of trailers here in australia and hopefully track down some of these manufacturers/ triailers?- im at uni, so theres a bit of spare time! cheers, ian.

Thanks for that Tony!
Ooh how much i have learnt since i asked that initial question all that time ago about Australian trailers! I even found that ford america made a prototype jeep trailer. I've even found info about the production of the #4's and details of #3 and #3A's! #1 and 2's i`m still chasing! A couple of questions for you then- GMH-W- does the W stand for Woodville, something else or you dont know? Do you have any details about the IHC trailer?- more pictures? I have never seen an IHC, but then again, up until the weekend, i wouldnt have thought i would ever see a #2 either! I have begun a kind of register of trailers- ones i see, see for sale etc. I`m kicking myself i didnt pay more attention to all the trailers at the MJCQ swap (was this where the IHC trailer was?) Thanks, Ian.

The IHC was seen at the Uralla Museum, one of the benefits of driving, eh? Yes, there was a No2 at the MJCQ swap, owned by a forum member, no less! The No2 was adapted from the Aust No1 to carry stretchers. Also discussed in This thread, here's some pics: |

A simple design, here we see the brackets on the floor for the feet of a stretcher, and the openings in the headboard for the stretcher handles. The brackets on the side are for semi-circular hood bows.

I know of three of them here in Brisbane. BTW I am not real happy with the quality of Charles Hope fridges at the moment , my 1950 beer fridge tripped my safety switch the other day and I have not had a chance to look at it yet. So they don't even last 57 years, what a piece of junk! My mother owns a 1940's Charles Hope fridge and it still is going like a trooper, it had a paint job 10 years ago and I fitted a new start relay about the same time. Unfortunatilly Charles Hope probably went out of business because there fridges lasted too long. Sad isn't it! Ian if you want to start a register let me know I would love to help. Jeff |

57 + years
wow
thats an innings for a fridge most new ones have a life expectancy of around 15 years says a lot for hand built equipment and a bit of pride in workmanship

Dandenong was out in the back of beyond , a rural area, Although that doesn't mean much as they built a bearing factory up at Echuca of all places . Mike

Rear view. When I restore this trailer it will be painted in Khaki Green No. 3 and have those horrible stars removed.

Re. Paint
Just had another look at the nomenclature plate and saw it was a 1945 manufacture. KG3 is not the correct colour for that year so back to research.

Hi Radek,
Thanks for the pictures, not a bad trailer someone has done a nice job of cutting a tailgate into it and I don't blaim them. They are a bugger to get heavy things out of. The eye looks way too small. It is also fitted with CJ rims, you can seen the gaps between the centre and the rim. Jeff |
