FS: Bofors canvas cover & 25pdr steel case

1. The canvas cover for a 40 mm Bofors Gun loader opening.
In excellent shape.

2. An 25 pdr. steel case for four shells. Inside in nice condition with all
frames inside but the outside needs work.

Interesting that the CDN manufactured 25-pdr projectile box is so different to the Australian manufactured box. Same or very similar size externally, but the means of carrying/securing the four projectiles is quite different.

Nice to see the label still survives inside, too.

I think I have a spare tin cover for the Bofors. If I do, I'll trade you the postage for the cleaning stave ends for the postage for the cover. The cover itself will be my contribution to your growing collection of ordnance.

Give me some time to search, as the barn is frozen shut after the last freeze-thaw-freeze cycle!

I do believe these covers are for the extra rounds "squirrelly" clip mounted beside the loader.

I believe you're right. On the one Collectors has (which he got from me)
there is no securing strap (made that way) but on the one Dirk bought there
is a web strap and buckle to secure it on. The back is also pocket
shaped with a lower cover.

Maybe one is for the top loader and one for the ready clips?

Same drawing number on both covers. I see straps on the CS one, but no buckle.

Hi Guys:

There would be no need to keep water off the ready ammo in the toast-rack, it got used too quickly. At the end of an engagement, when the gun was out of action, the toast-rack would be emptied and the ammo wiped down and put away.

The intricate mechanism in the autoloader had to be kept clean and dry. Covers were made in tin, canvas web and leather. A friend in the UK has one of the leather covers on his Bofors... heavy and thick and he has to keep it soft with tons of saddle soap!

If you look at the canvas web cover it has a flap on the left side to cover the chute that the ammo clips fall from. With such a light cover the strap would ensure it didn't blow away on the road. Even the tin ones had a leather strap to secure them to the gun so they wouldn't bounce off.

In all honesty, I wouldn't know enough to agree or disagree with you, HOWEVER: on page 56 of my Canadian 40mm parts identification list, it describes part number CM6074 (the number which is on both the cover above and the cover over at collectors source) as "Cover, ammunition rack, .40mm mounting mk1".

Next on the list is "CAN105A cover, automatic loader, QF40mm gun Cmk1."

Next on the list is HOOD CGB5037 which is the metal hood.

Hmmm! Hoisted on my own petard. On the Boffins, we never had an ammo cover as we were in concrete gun pits (the pits may still exist out in Shilo's beautiful tundra!) so, without due diligence and proper research, I spoke up!

That'll learn me to look in the book first!

I spoke to Fred at Collectors' Source and he is holding the "Cover, ammunition rack, .40mm mounting mk1" for me.

Rob Fast- still looking for the 17 pounder manuals... may take a while, my place is a disaster under construction! 30 Fd Regt, RCA (The Bytown Gunners) have acquired a 17 Pounder which they plan to clean up and use to commemorate the 51st ATk Bty, one of the antecedents of 30 Fd. They are missing the Gunner's seat and mount, as am I. If you are missing it also, I will make arrangements to have three seat mounts made up at my local metal basher and melter. I'll borrow the master from the CWM to have it copied. You're on your own to find a nice clean tractor seat of the right style tho'. Seems they have become a decorator item in these parts and are commanding silly prices at farm auctions!
