Below from an 80 year old Dutch guy who I know. Ron

It was not May 7 that the artist painted this, but several days later. That Polar Bear recce unit stood in front of the Royal Palace, more to the left; I know, I was there...
Shortly afterwards, they had to leave again, and then the Germans opened fire on the jubilant crowd, killing some 20 people; sad, sad
But starting the 9th, food arrived: meat and vegetables , Irish stew , powdered eggs , chocolate bars , powdered tea with milk powder

Recent research showed more lives were lost in the first few days after the German surrender (5 - 8 May 1945) then we knew: in the Western part of the Netherlands there were at least 24 fatal shootings resulting in 114 Dutch and 42 Germans being killed.
