It is a 2 part paint, so there will be no spray can.

It will also be a bugger to sandblast or remove.

That could be an option Chris... I have some of that stuff around here somewhere. I may do a test shot on some scrap metal and compare the consistency. I wonder if the rocker guard has any chemical resistance properties (ie: to battery acid)?

Finally laying down some primer today. The body shop mixed me up some epoxy primer with an OD green tint.

Default Days off

I'm planning on taking the next few days off to get some painting done.

For all of the body parts, I have used an epoxy primer. I really like it, vs red oxide. I wanted to put down a super durable base coat to protect everything for many years. So my base coat of paint on everything is a high quality epoxy paint that is closely matched to the semigloss OD (but it's a bit more glossy). All inner surfaces of the body and engine compartment will then get an over coat of the proper semigloss OD (from BCA) as a finish color. The exterior of the jeep will be finished in the three color camouflage pattern from the 70's & 80's (I'll post the details of the paint used for that later).

Default Clean up

I still have a few boxes of the "smalls" to clean up and paint too... not to mention all the bolts, nuts and things like footman loops.

If you have any spares of those Ramsy 50R smalls, I would happily take one off your hands.

Before you spray Brians paint, I should let you know that I have had success with a NAPA enamel hardener when spraying with Brian's paint and with the gillespie paints. It will toughen up the interior semi gloss, but may make the exterior flat colours a little too shiny.

That's very good to know Rob. Looks like I'll be making a trip to Napa today. I do want that coating to be as durable as possible, so the hardener will be added. I have already sprayed the bottom side, and I really like working with Brian's paint. It made me smile too.

If I trip over any other 50r's I'll be sure to let you know!

The hardener I have been using is matalpro urethane catalyst part number 6001C. I believe they also have a larger can of 6003C. As it contains isocyanides, it goes without saying that you need some extra levels of PPE.

Thanks John. I hope to have it looking like something more substantial in a few more days. Painting and watching it dry takes a lot of time.

Wayne, love the conversion of the garage into a spray booth with copious amounts of plastic drop sheets and construction tape!
Will likely have to do the same, otherwise my alternative plan is my Can Tire garage in a box outside when the weather is decent...

Default ....slow...

A couple of update photos... I need to go away for work again this week, so next weekend I will paint over the primer on the outside of the body. The inside and underside of the body are completely painted, and a whole bunch of the miscellaneous things are painted now. Still have lots of odds and ends to paint after the main body parts are done.

Default Base coat

To keep up with the series of paint stages, here are a few more photos. This is the base coat (as mentioned previously, I wanted something high quality to seal everything in). When this dries, I will commence with the three color camo pattern. I will feel a bit guilty painting flat camo over this nice Dupont paint... oh well.

Oh, and of course before I walked away, I noticed that two very small flies committed suicide in the fresh paint!

I took the carb apart cleaned all the crap and buildup out of it, and replaced most of the components with a kit. My kit was missing a few parts, so I need to order a few more kits and rebuild it again (hopefully not until winter though).

A bit more progress on the front end tonight.

Hanno; Thanks for increasing the allowable file size for photos! It makes things much easier.

Looks like you have one extraction and one heli-coil to install on that carb. The two screws that hold the throttle cable bracket down are chronics for stripping the carb. Helicoiling the pair of them is the best thing you can do.

I'll throw a plug in for the Kleen-flo carburator and metal parts cleaner (part nos 651,652 and 653). It is the old school stuff where you strip the carb, and put all the parts into the basket and submerge it. It has been a godsend other than the fact that it dissolves it's own container in about 2-3 years. It also works great on paint gun parts, stripping them to look brand new. It might be a little expensive for a one off project, but for repeated use it is the best. The spray cans of carb cleaner you buy at Cdn tire etc don't even compare.

Rob: I was thinking about how nice it would be to dunk the carb in a bucket of cleaner. You are right, it does a perfect job and leaves nothing behind.

It must be just the way things look in the photo, but fortunately no extraction or stripped holes in the body. Although having heli-coils in the two holes you mention would be a good feature (maybe in the future).

As things would have it, today I found the complete "unopened" carb kit that I was looking for last night.

I love my Deuces but you're making it real hard not to need a jeep project one day. That is looking so good with the fresh engine block and new paint.

I'm traveling down to Red Deer for the Prairie Motor brigade show, Aug. 26, tentatively hauling 2 WW11 jeeps for static display.

If you don't have it ready for the "Really Big Show", in Red Deer, it might be my opportunity to slip into WV for a peak. You're coming to the show right?

Here's the link to the Aug. 26 Swap and Show and shop and swap!....bottom of page.

I look forward to seeing you in Red Deer Dave! I hope your towing vehicle is a deuce. We need to see one of those beauties at the show. ...and of course you are welcome in WV any time.

Default Seat Belts...

My old seat belts were mismatched, sun-bleached and probably not serviceable any longer. Its unlikely they would pass any type of inspection, so I decided to replace them. I finally decided on a set from an online vendor: www.seatbeltplanet.com

This is the closest model I could find to the ones originally used in the jeep. Although, I have seen many different styles of belts & buckles used in these jeeps (I don't think there was any "one" standard model).

Here are some photos of my new ones. So far I am pleased with these replacements. I know others have been discussing seat belts to replace their old ones. Let me know if you have any specific questions about these ones.

I had two new pieces of glass cut for the windshield, and I installed them last night (I have a new respect for people who make installing glass look easy). Since I found the carb kit I was originally looking for, I pulled the carb and installed the remaining new parts.

Otherwise, lots of painting little parts and nuts and bolts, as I install all the small pieces. I sandblasted and primed my wheels, so hope to get them painted tomorrow. New rubber is waiting in the shed.

Default Back to reality...

Well, my vacation is over and its back to work this week. Progress on the jeep is going to slow down a bit. I have several small things left to do, and then take it in for a provincial inspection before getting it registered.

I did get time to mount the new tires...

Working on connecting the gauge cluster and dashboard controls now. I will need to go over the clutch adjustment, bleed brakes etc, and other final checks on everything in the next few days. Looking forward to getting this thing outside...
