M35CDN - 27 Years On

Here are two images of M35CDN 58662 taken 27 years apart, almost on the same date and in nearly the same location.

The black and white image was taken at a 1983 display of then new MLVWs at Cartier Square in Ottawa. The colour image from 2010 is of the vehicle in its current configuration, again outside of Cartier Square.

Hmmm...2 things that popped out to me.

When did CF change the tire tread pattern from whatever it was to the current Michelins?

When did CF change the BO drive light housing from under the service headlight to the bumper position?

As a sidebar, I recall doing my conversion course c1982 in Kingston and thinking that the dash of the MLVW was too "busy" for the average soldier to master.

Well, imagine my amazement after sitting in the cab of the MSVS. Perhaps todays soldier is imbued with technological skill and ability, but putting a Cpl/Pte behind the wheel of this rig is scary.

You will notice in the newer pictures that the M35Cdn has the new styly combat split rims thet separate by removing the bolts in the centre. This style was adapted because pf the possibility of using run flats in the tires. Also the newer style tires have better traction and are smoother driving on the highway
The front bumpers extensions were to accomodate winches and a platform to work on. I have both the Cdn and US versions of the M35 and Cdn version, the front extension make engine work easier especially if you have to remove a large piece. All MLVWs were retrofitted with the longer style extension.
