Quoting, Ad Nauseum
Hanno, there seems to be a growing trend to copy the previous post, so as to reply to it.
Is this necessary? To me it is a waste of storage space and complicates my re-visiting of previous posts. I can usually work it out. Do you have any advice on this?

I often will use the quote feature, especially on a thread that starts to get very involved or else meanders a bit, as MLU threads often do. The advantage to the quote is that there is no confusion as to which post the reply is to. I have seen threads where confusion and sometimes even hurt feelings happen because of the lack of the quote.
I will often shorten the quote to just the relevant part that I am replying to. I like the quotes. |

I actually agree (mostly) with both of the above.
Quoting a specific point or phrase can do wonders for clarity, while quoting complete posts (which may have quoted other replies in turn) rarely helps. As with so many things in life, a little common sense goes a long way. |

Surely, that is the key, just quote the part you need to and lose the pictures from your quote.

I does help in find the specific bit of text /subject one is referring to. If the reply is generic to the thread, quoting is not necessary. Hanno

My advice is as follows:
1) Click on the "Quote" button on the lower right of a post. You will see the following text in your message box ([] replaced by <> to show it this way): <QUOTE=Lynn Eades;231200>Hanno, there seems to be a growing trend to copy the previous post, so as to reply to it.2) Then remove the text you down't want to reply to and type your message below the quoted text: <QUOTE=Lynn Eades;231200>Do you have any advice on this?</QUOTE>3) And hit reply, the result is as follows: Here you go Lynn. The added bonus is that you can click on this button to jump back to the quoted text. Hope this helps. Hanno
