One for the bibliography
Was nosing about the bibliography section at MLU this evening and noted that while Earle Birney's "Turvey" was listed in the fiction, "Remember Me" by Edward Meade is not.
Some may know the book, but it seems to be largely forgotten now - my copy is a 1965 printing, number 47 in the McClelland & Stewart New Canadian Library series, but long delisted, and apparently quite obscure, even to some scholars of Canadian literature. It was written by Winnipeg-born Edward Meade, who served as a platoon commander in a tank transporter unit with the Canadian Army in France in WWII. The novel tells the story of O'Rourke, a Western Canadian who enlists in the army, goes overseas, trains in England, has a few insubordination episodes, leads a Service Corps transport section, and finally ends up as a dispatch rider. It describes much of Canadian army life, notably the long restive training period in England, and the details of operations in the theatre of combat. Lots of colour, reality and details, with a poignant and moving final scene. Every MLU devotee ought to read it. Cheers, MP
