Yep, the 1960-61 trials in northern and central Australia: you can see the Leyland FV1119(A) heavy recovery tractor in the background (but Australia purchased the much better M543 wrecker instead).
The Inter was termed a 'Truck, Semitrailer, IHC, Experimental'. The design didn't get beyond the experimental. This was the second set of Outback trails for the L/R Ambulance: the first they were pretty much on their own, just the two prototypes. Mike C |

Interesting, 8 stud hubs I wonder did it originally have 16 inch blitz rims.

McGrath trailer
I have recently acquired a TRAILER 4 WHEELED 7 TON G S (AUST) No 1 with converter 2 Wh. They have 20' 8 stud wheels. Definitely original. But the front axle has been converted to 10.00 singles ( they cut the rims up and welded 7" spider rims to the centres).
It has Vacuum brakes on the rear axle, the air tank, relay valve and master cylinder are there but not a air chamber as shown in one of the earlier photos. If anybody has a PBR T110 combination master cylinder unit to take air and vacuum power cylinders. Please let me know as it may be pulled by a truck with air brakes. It has a cast iron ID plate the full length of the steelwork between the rear shackles with the serial number 84?? cast in it. The dolly has had a similar plate but only the boltholes are there The top piece of the round front and spare tyre carrier have been cut off. The floor needs A bit of work,!!$$!! In the 1960's I bought a very similar trailer it had 8 stud rims but a square front and was number 8244. |

Hi John,
Nice find. The Semi-trailer, 7 ton GS (Aust) No.1 had a square front and a heavy-duty oil-well type turntable and a four wheel bogie with 8.25-20 tyres (although the type is also listed with 10.50-18 as well: an alternative or maybe earlier?). It was the same design as used for the specialist semi-trailers, such as the Pontoon, SBG and Boring Plant, but with a plain deck without the specialised fittings. The other Aust 7 ton semi-trailers were: No.2: round front, McGrath turntable No. 2A: square front, McGrath turntable No.3: round front, McGrath quick-release turntable, fitted with booster brakes. No.4: square front, Army-design turntable, drop sides. All the No.2 to No.4 were single axle with dual wheels. The dolly is a 'Converter, Semi-trailer, 2-wheeled (Aust)' for use with semi-trailers with quick-release turntables. Tractors were either Ford, Inter, Dodge MC or CMP Ford or Chev. Thanks Mike for the reply. When I visited Ian Styles last week he produced a book with data called DMV " B" vehicles and I brought home a very nice photo of what looks like my trailer, dolly , round front , landing gear . It shews the 4 drop down sides and the pipe frame for a cover which I don't have.
I have yet to move to a location closer to home and will take more photos. I would like to restore it but it will need 4 rims (8 stud) , tyres floor boards brake overhaul and a new curved front. I am concerned if the authorities will accept it without brakes on the dolly, I will make some cautious enquiries! I will keep you informed. |

Which semi trailer?
Hi John,
I have a copy of the DMV book (and I think Keith Webb did repros, too). The image in that book is labelled as a No.1, which appears to be at odds with the description provided in my previous post. The image in the DMV book seems to show a No.3, not a No.1 based on the description. The image shows a round front, McGrath quick-release turntable with dolly converter, single rear axle with dual wheels and booster ie air brakes - you can see the airline looped around the drawbar of the converter. So does your trailer have these elements? Or is it a dual rear axle with single wheels? Does your trailer have the nomenclature plate still attached? I think Lang has a parts book that might help, too (see his earlier post in this thread). Mike |

Mike, Thank you very much for the information .Here is more info.
I have the dolly which appears complete except for the rims and tyres, it has a single rear axle with 4 8 stud rims and tyres( very old! ) The brake system is all there, vacuum tank, relay valve , power chamber and master cylinder. These parts should not be a problem as I have spares scavenged during conversion of trailers from vacuum to air. When it dries out I want to move it closer to home and will get more details and photos. John. |
